John Mousinho has urged caution over summer spending while confirming that Jahnoah Markelo was a transfer target for Portsmouth FC in January.
The Pompey boss explained that, unlike some Championship rivals, his side cannot afford expensive transfer mistakes. He pointed to Markelo’s £4.3m move to Coventry City—where the winger has barely featured—as an example of how other clubs can invest in long-term signings without immediate returns.
Mousinho stressed that if Portsmouth are given the green light to increase spending this summer, their signings must deliver instant impact. While he remains optimistic about backing from the club’s owners, he acknowledged that recruitment is never guaranteed to succeed, even with thorough planning and higher fees.
He also highlighted that some clubs have the squad depth and financial flexibility to absorb signings who take time to develop, but Portsmouth must be far more precise in their approach. Talks are expected to clarify the club’s recruitment strategy, as Mousinho balances ambition with the need to avoid costly errors in the transfer market.
