Derby County will aim to continue their upward momentum when the new season begins in August after narrowly missing out on a Championship play-off place. A final-day home defeat to Sheffield United left John Eustace’s side in eighth place, but the campaign still marked significant progress compared to the previous season’s fight to avoid an immediate return to League One.
There is growing optimism both on and off the pitch at Pride Park. Derby appear determined to mount a serious promotion challenge next season, while reports continue to link Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh with potential investment in the club.
Eustace’s focus, however, remains firmly on strengthening the squad. After Football League World recently revealed Derby’s interest in former Ipswich Town forward Conor Chaplin, another transfer target has now emerged ahead of the summer window.
The Rams are reportedly eager to move quickly in the market, with Eustace keen to beat Middlesbrough to the signing of Matt Targett from Newcastle United.
Targett, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, is set to become a free agent when his Newcastle contract expires next month. The 30-year-old enjoyed a productive spell in the Championship, contributing four goals and four assists in 42 appearances as Boro secured a play-off place.
Despite Middlesbrough’s interest in bringing him back permanently, Derby are now prepared to challenge for his signature. Strengthening at left-back is seen as a priority, even though Derry Murkin impressed after joining from FC Utrecht in February and quickly established himself in the side.
