Bradford City Strengthen Midfield with the Signing of Henry Cartwright from Leicester City
Bradford City have officially completed the signing of promising young midfielder Henry Cartwright from Leicester City in a deal for an undisclosed transfer fee. The 21-year-old has committed his future to the Bantams by signing a three-year contract, becoming the club’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign.
Cartwright also becomes the third player to join Bradford since the squad returned for pre-season training. With the transfer finalized, he could make his unofficial debut as early as tomorrow when Bradford City face FC United of Manchester in their opening pre-season friendly.
Having spent the majority of his footballing education at Leicester City, Cartwright joined the club’s academy at just eight years old and progressed steadily through the youth ranks. Despite his development and potential, he never made a competitive senior appearance for the Foxes before seeking opportunities elsewhere to further his career.
Last season proved to be a significant step in his development after joining Scottish Premiership side Falkirk on loan. During his spell in Scotland, Cartwright became an important member of the squad, making 42 appearances across all competitions. His consistent performances showcased his work ethic, composure, and growing maturity in midfield while contributing two goals during the campaign.
One of his most memorable moments came in October when he scored a spectacular long-range equalizer from approximately 25 yards in Falkirk’s 1-1 draw against Rangers. The result carried major consequences, as it ultimately led to the dismissal of Rangers manager Russell Martin from his position at Ibrox. In an interesting twist of fate, Martin has since taken over as Leicester City’s head coach.
Although his season featured several impressive performances, it also included a disappointing moment in the Scottish Cup semi-finals. Cartwright was shown a red card during Falkirk’s penalty shootout defeat to Dunfermline, bringing an unfortunate end to the club’s cup run.
Bradford City believe the midfielder possesses exactly the qualities needed to thrive under manager Graham Alexander’s tactical approach. Cartwright is widely recognized for his aggressive style of play, relentless work rate, and ability to operate with high intensity throughout matches. His willingness to press opponents, recover possession quickly, and maintain a strong competitive mentality makes him an ideal fit for Bradford’s energetic system.
Although Cartwright’s Leicester City contract was initially due to expire this summer, the Premier League club activated an option to extend his deal by an additional year before agreeing to his transfer to Bradford.
Speaking after completing the move, Cartwright expressed his excitement about beginning the next chapter of his career.
“I am absolutely buzzing. This move has been in the works for quite some time, and I am delighted that everything has finally been completed.”
He also spoke fondly about Bradford City’s passionate supporters, recalling his previous experience at Valley Parade during an EFL Trophy fixture.
“The supporters here create an incredible atmosphere. I’ve played at Valley Parade before in the EFL Trophy, so I already know how loud and passionate the fans are. I can’t wait to get started and represent this club.”
Bradford City manager Graham Alexander admitted that negotiations had been ongoing behind the scenes for some time and was pleased to finally welcome the midfielder to the club.
Alexander praised Cartwright’s qualities, describing him as a player who will add greater competition and depth to the midfield department. He highlighted the youngster’s impressive energy levels, excellent passing ability, and determination to establish himself as a regular first-team player.
According to the City boss, Cartwright possesses the technical quality and mentality required to continue developing while making an immediate contribution to the squad as Bradford prepare for the challenges of the new season.
