Coventry City Continue Pursuit of Carl Rushworth Despite Alternative Goalkeeper Links

Coventry City remain fully committed to signing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, despite recent reports suggesting the club may be exploring other options in the transfer market.

The Sky Blues have made the Brighton shot-stopper their primary target this summer as they look to strengthen one of the most important positions in the squad ahead of the new campaign. Although speculation has emerged linking Coventry with Everton goalkeeper Mark Travers, sources close to the situation indicate that Rushworth is still the club’s preferred choice, with negotiations between Coventry and Brighton continuing.

Rushworth Still Coventry’s Number One Goalkeeping Target

Coventry’s interest in Rushworth has been well documented throughout the summer transfer window. The club is believed to have already submitted a bid worth approximately £20 million, but Brighton reportedly rejected the offer as they seek a higher valuation for one of their highly regarded young goalkeepers.

Despite that setback, Coventry have not abandoned their pursuit. Instead, the club remains willing to improve its offer in an effort to reach an agreement that satisfies Brighton’s demands. Discussions between the two clubs are understood to be ongoing, with both sides hopeful that a compromise can eventually be reached.

Rushworth enjoyed an outstanding campaign on loan last season, producing a string of impressive performances that earned him the Championship’s prestigious Golden Glove award after recording the highest number of clean sheets in the division.

Following the conclusion of his loan spell, the 24-year-old returned to his parent club Brighton. However, uncertainty remains over his long-term future, with regular first-team opportunities at the Premier League club expected to be limited. That situation has strengthened Coventry’s belief that they can persuade the goalkeeper to make a permanent move to the CBS Arena.

Goalkeeper Keen on Permanent Coventry Move

Rushworth has made little attempt to hide his admiration for Coventry City and is understood to be enthusiastic about the prospect of returning on a permanent basis.

A transfer would provide him with the opportunity to establish himself as a first-choice goalkeeper while continuing his development through consistent competitive football. The club’s ambitions and long-term project are believed to appeal strongly to the England youth international.

Another major factor likely to influence his decision is the continued presence of head coach Frank Lampard. Coventry recently secured Lampard’s future by handing him a new three-year contract, providing stability and reinforcing the club’s ambitions for the seasons ahead.

With Lampard committing himself to the project, Coventry hope it will further convince Rushworth that the club represents the ideal environment for the next stage of his career.

Mark Travers Emerges as Possible Backup Option

While Rushworth remains the priority, Coventry are naturally preparing contingency plans should negotiations with Brighton ultimately fail.

Recent reports have linked the Sky Blues with Republic of Ireland international Mark Travers, who currently plays for Everton. Transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Coventry are considering triggering a release clause in the goalkeeper’s contract to secure his services.

Although those reports have generated speculation among supporters, Coventry continue to focus their efforts on completing a deal for Rushworth before seriously pursuing alternative targets.

Travers Offers Valuable Championship Experience

If Coventry are forced to move on from Rushworth, Travers would represent an experienced and proven option.

The 27-year-old has spent much of his professional career in the Premier League, although opportunities as a regular starter have been limited. During his time with both Bournemouth and Everton, Travers has largely served as a backup goalkeeper behind established first-choice internationals.

In search of regular playing time, he enjoyed productive loan spells in the Championship with both Stoke City and Middlesbrough, where his performances demonstrated his quality and reliability at second-tier level.

Travers joined Everton from Bournemouth last summer in a transfer reportedly worth around £4 million. According to recent reports, Everton would expect to receive at least a similar fee should they decide to sell him, with the possibility of making a small profit on their investment.

Since arriving at Goodison Park, however, first-team opportunities have been scarce. Jordan Pickford has remained Everton’s undisputed number one goalkeeper, leaving Travers to make just two senior appearances, both of which came in the Carabao Cup.

Coventry Hope to Complete Their First Choice Signing

For now, Coventry City’s recruitment team remains focused on bringing Carl Rushworth to the club.

His outstanding performances in the Championship, combined with his age, potential, and desire for regular football, make him an ideal long-term addition between the posts. Although the transfer is not yet complete, negotiations remain active, and the Sky Blues are optimistic that an agreement with Brighton can still be reached.

Should those talks eventually collapse, Coventry have already begun identifying suitable alternatives, with Mark Travers among the names under consideration. Until then, however, Rushworth remains firmly at the top of the club’s summer transfer wishlist as they continue shaping their squad for the upcoming season.
