It had seemed increasingly likely that Saudi businessman Turki Alalshikh would complete his proposed takeover of Derby County, with discussions involving owner David Clowes continuing throughout the summer.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn on Monday evening when Derby confirmed that talks with Lion Sport, the company linked to Alalshikh, had ended. The proposed takeover had already received the necessary approvals, making the collapse of the deal even more surprising.
Alalshikh later explained his position on social media, suggesting that the lengthy process had left insufficient time to make the squad changes he wanted before the new season. Although he withdrew from the current deal, he indicated that he would remain in contact with the club and did not completely rule out making another approach in the future.
Given Alalshikh’s financial resources, many Derby supporters had hoped his arrival would provide the club with significant investment. However, Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward told FLW that, despite initially being shocked, he was ultimately relieved that the takeover had fallen through.
Woodward questioned whether Alalshikh would have provided the long-term stability Derby need, arguing that the club would be better served by continuing under Clowes and taking a sustainable approach.
He did, however, admit that the failed takeover could have consequences for Derby’s transfer plans. With the club having potentially delayed recruitment while the deal was being negotiated, there is now increased pressure to strengthen John Eustace’s squad before the transfer window closes.
Derby remain short of options in several key positions, particularly in midfield and out wide, while additional support is also needed in attack.
Eustace has already demonstrated his ability to compete at Championship level, and Derby will be hoping the club can provide him with the reinforcements required to challenge at the top end of the division.
With the takeover no longer dominating proceedings, attention must now turn firmly towards recruitment. The next few weeks could prove crucial as Derby look to strengthen their squad and ensure they are ready for the remainder of the campaign.
