Chelsea set to sell £11m striker: Preston, Derby County and Birmingham City should move quickly
Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana appears to be approaching the end of his difficult spell at Stamford Bridge, with the 23-year-old reportedly expected to leave the Premier League club permanently before the transfer window closes. Given his age, previous goalscoring record and the potential he has shown during several loan spells, a move to the Championship could provide him with the opportunity to finally establish himself—and Preston North End, Derby County and Birmingham City could all benefit from making a move.
Fofana joined Chelsea in January 2023 from Norwegian club Molde in a deal worth approximately £11 million. He arrived in England with a strong reputation after an impressive 2022 season, during which he scored 15 goals in 24 Eliteserien appearances and played an important role in helping Molde win the league title by a commanding 18-point margin.
Despite the promise surrounding his arrival, Fofana struggled to establish himself at Chelsea. He became one of several talented young players who found opportunities limited within the club’s crowded squad. Since joining the Blues, he has made only four senior appearances and has spent much of his time away from the club on loan.
His various loan spells have produced mixed results. He scored twice in 17 appearances for Union Berlin, netted four goals in 15 matches for Burnley, and registered two goals in nine appearances for Goztepe. His most productive spell came with Fatih Karagumruk, where he scored eight times in 15 games, while his stint at Strasbourg was less successful, producing no goals in nine appearances.
With Chelsea now seemingly prepared to sanction a permanent departure, reports suggest that Fofana is attracting interest from clubs both in the Championship and abroad. Preston North End
Preston North End arguably have one of the greatest needs for a new striker in the Championship, particularly following the departure of Milutin Osmajic to Serie A side Genoa. Although Osmajic was a controversial figure during his time at Deepdale, his ability to provide a consistent goalscoring threat cannot be ignored, and replacing him quickly will be essential.
At present, Preston’s attacking options appear limited, with Genk loanee Jusef Erabi standing as their only recognised specialist centre-forward. The club may pursue loan targets such as Southampton’s Cameron Archer, but a permanent signing could provide greater long-term stability.
Fofana could represent an attractive option. He is still only 23 and possesses significant room for development, but he needs regular first-team football to fulfil his potential. Preston could offer him exactly that opportunity. The club were also reportedly linked with him towards the end of last summer’s transfer window, suggesting that there may already have been some interest.
If Fofana were able to rediscover the form he showed at Molde and during his most successful loan spells, Preston could not only solve an immediate attacking problem but potentially develop a player whose value could increase significantly in the future.
Derby County
Derby County also have reasons to strengthen their attacking department as the transfer window enters its final stages. The Rams have yet to bring in a new striker despite Ben Brereton Diaz departing at the end of his loan spell. Their situation has been made more difficult by Patrick Agyemang’s long-term Achilles injury, which is expected to keep him out until approximately the new year.
Although Derby have other options, including Carlton Morris, their depth in the centre-forward position could still be improved. The club’s significant £7.3 million signing from last summer has also shown encouraging signs and could eventually become one of the division’s stronger forwards once fully settled, but additional attacking cover would give manager John Eustace more flexibility.
Derby may prefer a loan signing to temporarily address the absence of Agyemang, but Fofana could still be an appealing option if Chelsea are willing to agree a favourable permanent deal. His previous performances demonstrate that he can contribute goals even in challenging circumstances. He scored four times in 15 Premier League appearances for Burnley during the 2023/24 season and later found the net eight times in 15 matches during his spell with Fatih Karagumruk.
A successful move to Pride Park could benefit both parties. Fofana would receive the opportunity to play regularly and rebuild his reputation, while Derby could add another goalscoring threat to their squad. If he performs well, the club could also benefit from his potential future resale value. His goals could prove particularly important if Derby are aiming to maintain a place in the top eight.
Birmingham City
Birmingham City may also emerge as a realistic destination, particularly if Marvin Ducksch leaves the club before the transfer window closes. The German striker’s future appears uncertain after he was dropped for the final three games of last season and then featured for only six minutes across Birmingham’s opening three competitive fixtures of the current campaign.
Reports from Germany have suggested that Birmingham could be willing to accept offers of around €500,000 for Ducksch, with a return to either the Bundesliga or 2. Bundesliga being a possibility. If he does leave, Birmingham would likely need to bring in another forward to strengthen their options.
Chris Davies appears to have significant faith in August Priske, with the 22-year-old expected to enjoy a breakthrough campaign. However, behind him, the club’s options are relatively limited. Luis Vazquez provides cover, while Jay Stansfield can also operate as the main striker when necessary, but the departure of Ducksch could leave Birmingham short of depth.
Of the three Championship clubs mentioned, Birmingham may be in the strongest financial position to complete a deal for Fofana. They could potentially offer Chelsea an attractive package and provide the player with the opportunity to compete for a place without immediately placing the entire goalscoring burden on him.
At St Andrew’s, Fofana would have competition from players such as Priske and Alvarez, meaning he would need to earn his place in the starting lineup. However, that competition could also help create a strong attacking environment and give Birmingham greater depth throughout a demanding Championship campaign.
Ultimately, Birmingham’s interest may depend heavily on what happens with Ducksch. If the German striker remains at the club, another forward may not be an immediate priority. If he leaves, however, Fofana could represent a relatively young, talented and potentially high-upside replacement.
