‘Can’t really deny that’: Championship rivals in talks to sign £20m former Portsmouth man after talk of Fratton return

Former Portsmouth defender Adam Webster appears to be moving closer to joining Sheffield United, despite earlier speculation among Pompey supporters that he could return to Fratton Park.

The 31-year-old centre-back left Brighton at the end of last season after the club decided not to extend his contract, bringing his seven-year stay with the Seagulls to an end. During his time at Brighton, Webster made 158 appearances in all competitions. His departure naturally led to discussions among Portsmouth fans about the possibility of him returning to the club where he began his professional career.

Webster came through Portsmouth’s youth system and established himself in the first team before leaving in 2016. He made 96 appearances for Pompey before moving on, later playing for Ipswich Town and Bristol City. His performances eventually earned him a major £20 million transfer to Brighton in 2019.

However, despite the sentimental appeal of a potential return to Portsmouth, a move back to Fratton Park was considered unlikely. Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho had wanted to strengthen his defence, but the club is now reportedly looking to reduce the number of central defenders in the squad following the loan signing of Benjy Arthur. As a result, the possibility of Webster returning to his former club now appears to have completely disappeared.

Instead, Sheffield United have emerged as the leading contenders for his signature. Webster has also attracted interest from other clubs, including West Ham earlier in the summer, but Sheffield United appear to be in the strongest position to complete a deal.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder openly admitted that the club has been in contact with Webster after the defender was seen in Sheffield by supporters. Wilder jokingly acknowledged that it was impossible to deny Webster’s presence in the city and confirmed that the experienced defender is a player the club is seriously interested in signing.

Wilder explained that Webster is returning from a significant ACL injury suffered during his time at Brighton, but stressed that the injury is not career-ending. Since Webster is currently a free agent, Sheffield United have been exploring the possibility of signing him as part of a recruitment strategy focused on free transfers and loan deals.

The Sheffield United manager also revealed that he had previously spoken with Webster during the summer, when the player had several possible options available to him. However, Wilder confirmed that the possibility of joining Sheffield United remains open.

Because Webster has been without a club and has not completed a full pre-season, Wilder admitted that it could take time for him to regain full fitness and adapt to training with a new group of players. Nevertheless, if Sheffield United successfully complete the transfer, the club will thoroughly assess his physical condition and require him to pass a medical examination.

Wilder made it clear that Sheffield United would not be signing Webster merely as a long-term project. The intention would be to get him back to fitness and competing for a place in the team as soon as it is sensible and safe to do so.

Overall, although Portsmouth fans may have hoped to see their former academy graduate return to Fratton Park, that possibility now seems to be over. Adam Webster instead looks increasingly likely to remain in the Championship and join Sheffield United, where the club hopes his experience at Premier League level and his proven defensive ability can strengthen their squad once he has recovered his fitness.
