The sporting world is buzzing with speculation surrounding a potential blockbuster trade that could dramatically reshape the NBA landscape. While it has widely been assumed that the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors will aggressively pursue Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, a new prediction suggests the New York Knicks could unexpectedly enter the race — and potentially outmaneuver both Western Conference giants.
Antetokounmpo, the 31-year-old forward and 10-time NBA All-Star, is regarded as one of the league’s most dominant two-way players. With a contract valued at approximately $175 million, acquiring him would require a substantial trade package. However, according to WFAN radio personality Boomer Esiason, the Knicks may be better positioned than most believe.
Esiason confidently predicted last week that Antetokounmpo will be playing in New York next season. He explained that since the Bucks did not move him before the trade deadline, they are likely to wait until the offseason when more teams can present stronger asset packages. In that scenario, the Knicks could assemble a more competitive offer than the Lakers or Warriors.
Esiason went further, suggesting that if Antetokounmpo arrives in New York, Karl-Anthony Towns would likely be part of the outgoing trade package to make the finances and roster structure work.
The idea of Antetokounmpo joining forces with Jalen Brunson adds further intrigue to the possibility. The two stars together would immediately elevate the Knicks into championship-favorite territory in the Eastern Conference. Antetokounmpo has previously expressed openness to teaming up with elite talent, and the pairing with Brunson could be viewed as an ideal basketball fit.
Of course, much will depend on how the Knicks perform during the 2025–26 season. If New York captures its first NBA championship since 1973, the urgency to make a massive, franchise-altering trade could diminish. However, if the team falls short or exits the postseason in disappointing fashion, management may feel compelled to make an aggressive move to solidify its championship window for 2026–27 and beyond.
In that sense, a frustrating playoff run this season could paradoxically position the Knicks to make a bold move that changes the direction of the franchise.
As the offseason approaches, the battle for Antetokounmpo’s future promises to be one of the most closely watched storylines in professional basketball.
