The New York Knicks have decided to move on from Guerschon Yabusele, agreeing to trade the veteran forward to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for guard Dalen Terry as the NBA trade deadline approaches. With fewer than 15 hours remaining before the deadline, the two teams finalized terms on a deal that had reportedly been in the works for months, as New York actively explored ways to move Yabusele.

From a financial standpoint, the trade benefits the Knicks by creating additional salary cap flexibility ahead of the 2026 offseason. By sending Yabusele to Chicago, New York eliminates his player option for next season, freeing themselves from a future financial commitment. Terry, meanwhile, is on an expiring contract, meaning the Knicks regain the cap space they originally used to sign Yabusele.

Yabusele had been one of the Knicks’ most notable offseason acquisitions, second only to the hiring of head coach Mike Brown. The team used its taxpayer mid-level exception to bring in the French forward, a move that included a second-year option in his contract. However, with this trade, the Knicks effectively reverse that decision and recover the flexibility they had previously committed.

Dalen Terry, who was selected 18th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, comes to New York with a reputation for defensive awareness and solid size at his position. Despite those tools, the 23-year-old never managed to carve out a consistent role with the Bulls. Over his career, Terry has averaged just over 11 minutes per game across 204 appearances, suggesting limited opportunities to showcase his full potential.

Terry’s contract will expire at the end of the current season, though the Knicks retain the option to extend him a $7.7 million qualifying offer. According to Knicks Film School cap analyst Jeremy Cohen, signing that offer would grant Terry a no-trade clause. Given those conditions, the most likely outcome is that New York allows Terry to enter unrestricted free agency without placing any additional limitations on their roster flexibility.

Ultimately, Yabusele never appeared to be an ideal fit in Mike Brown’s system. He last saw game action on January 30, and his role diminished significantly as the season progressed. Despite his reduced playing time, the 30-year-old maintained a positive presence publicly, regularly supporting teammates on social media. However, frustration surfaced when Yabusele responded to a fan comment criticizing the way he was being used—specifically pointing out that he was being stationed on the perimeter instead of receiving post touches against smaller defenders.

Yabusele agreed with the sentiment, praising the fan’s “common sense” and acknowledging that Brown’s system did not play to his strengths. Notably, Yabusele had been signed before Brown was officially hired, further highlighting the disconnect between player and system from the outset.

In the end, the trade offers a clean break for both sides. Yabusele gets a fresh start with the Bulls, while the Knicks remove a looming contract decision and regain valuable cap flexibility moving forward.
