Derby County are reportedly considering a move to re-sign former academy graduate Max Lowe this summer, with the defender set to leave Sheffield Wednesday when his contract expires.
Now 29, Lowe has largely transitioned into a centre-back role, though Derby supporters will remember him mainly as a left-back during his first spell at Pride Park. He departed the club in 2020 alongside Jayden Bogle in a move to Sheffield United. While the transfer was initially believed to be worth £12 million, reports later suggested the actual fee was closer to £7 million combined.
Lowe has since represented both Sheffield clubs and also spent time on loan with Derby rivals Nottingham Forest. Despite that history, the Rams are said to be interested in bringing him back ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season.
According to reports from The Star, Derby face competition from Leicester City and Middlesbrough for Lowe’s signature. Leicester are believed to have already expressed interest, while Middlesbrough’s plans could depend on whether they achieve promotion to the Premier League.
FLW’s Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward believes a return under manager John Eustace would be a logical move. He feels Lowe could provide valuable cover and competition for Derry Murkin and Callum Elder, particularly given ongoing injury concerns within Derby’s left-back options.
Woodward pointed out that Murkin has struggled with injuries, Elder has an inconsistent fitness record, and veteran Craig Forsyth may be nearing the end of his time as a regular option despite still being under contract.
Elder, who underwent knee surgery in March after last featuring in February, had enjoyed a strong spell before his injury, contributing one goal and six assists during the season. However, Derby’s interest in Lowe could hint that the club may decide against extending Elder’s deal, as carrying four recognised left-backs seems unlikely.
Although Woodward believes Lowe would be a sensible addition because of his experience, age, and familiarity with the club, many Derby supporters reportedly remain unconvinced about the potential reunion.
