Derby County and Charlton Athletic are reportedly battling to sign former Lorient striker Sambou Soumano after both clubs submitted offers for the free agent.
Derby narrowly missed out on a Championship play-off place last season, while Charlton successfully secured their survival after earning promotion from League One. Both clubs are now looking to strengthen their squads ahead of the new campaign.
The Rams have already made an eye-catching addition by securing Bobby Clark on a permanent deal from Salzburg following his impressive loan spell. Charlton, meanwhile, are aiming to build on their first season back in the Championship under Nathan Jones.
According to reports from France, Derby and Charlton have each made concrete proposals to Soumano following the expiration of his contract with Lorient.
The 25-year-old featured 31 times in Ligue 1 last season, scoring four goals and providing two assists despite starting only eight matches. He previously enjoyed a productive 2024/25 season in Ligue 2, helping Lorient win promotion with 14 goals and three assists in 32 appearances.
Soumano has also gained experience through loan spells at Eupen, Rodez and Quevilly. His time at Quevilly was particularly successful, as he recorded 15 goals and two assists during the 2023/24 campaign.
While his Ligue 1 numbers may not immediately stand out, his strong record in Ligue 2 suggests he could adapt well to Championship football. With no transfer fee required, either Derby or Charlton could view the striker as a low-risk opportunity with significant upside.
Soumano has attracted interest from Championship clubs before, with Blackburn Rovers previously linked with him. Should he thrive in England, Derby or Charlton could be praised for securing a talented forward on a free transfer.
