Despite Going One Man Down, Frank Lampard Still Believe They Were A Better Team Ahead

Despite the setback of Abankwah’s red card in the 44th minute, Coventry City FC powered through to claim an emphatic 3–1 victory over Watford at the Building Society Arena — a night that tested their resolve and character to the limit. Watford boss Frank Lampard, though visibly frustrated by the officiating and the circumstances surrounding the sending-off, remained gracious in defeat and proud of his team’s fighting spirit.

Portsmouth FC face an important contract decision as a key first-team player seeks a new deal that would represent a clear increase on his current terms. That player is Colby Bishop, who continues to be a fan favourite at Fratton Park due to his goals, physical presence, and consistent performances. Bishop remains an integral part of John Mousinho’s squad and is widely regarded as one of the club’s most influential players. Discussions between Bishop’s representatives and the club are ongoing. Those close to the talks indicate the striker believes his current contract no longer reflects his importance to the team. While no figures are being made public, the request is understood to involve a notable uplift in wages, in line with senior players at the club. Portsmouth are keen to retain Bishop and avoid unnecessary disruption, but the club is also conscious of maintaining balance within its wage structure. With interest in proven goalscorers always present across the EFL, the situation is being handled carefully. For now, Bishop remains fully committed to Pompey’s objectives and continues to focus on performances on the pitch. A resolution is expected in the coming weeks, as both sides look to secure clarity over his long-term future at Fratton Park.

Lampard insisted that Watford were the better side for much of the game, dictating tempo and creating clear chances before the red card shifted the momentum. “The boys showed great attitude and heart,” he said. “Even with ten men, we tried to play our game. Credit to Coventry — they took their chances well, but I’m proud of my players for standing tall.”

Coventry, on the other hand, capitalized brilliantly on the numerical advantage, controlling possession and punishing Watford’s tired legs in the second half. Goals from Wright, O’Hare, and Simms sealed a memorable win that keeps their upward trajectory alive.

While Lampard’s men will rue missed opportunities, the performance showcased a blend of bravery and belief that suggests Watford remain a dangerous side, ready to bounce back stronger.
