West Ham have strengthened their defensive options by moving for experienced Dutch international Joël Veltman after defensive concerns emerged ahead of the new season. The need for reinforcements increased following Jean-Clair Todibo’s reported refusal to play for Nuno Espírito Santo after a disagreement towards the end of last season.
The pursuit of Veltman progressed rapidly. Initial reports linking the former Brighton defender with a move surfaced only on Wednesday evening, and he soon completed a medical ahead of signing a two-year contract.
Supporters will be hoping Veltman’s arrival marks the beginning of a busy spell in the transfer market after a relatively quiet summer. Despite interest from elsewhere, West Ham successfully convinced the 34-year-old to choose their project.
According to the Daily Mail, Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg—owned by Todd Boehly’s BlueCo consortium—also made an offer for Veltman after his Brighton contract expired at the end of June. However, the Dutch defender opted to continue his career in East London instead.
With his medical completed and personal terms agreed, an official announcement is expected shortly.
Although Veltman spent much of his time at Brighton playing at right-back, his natural position is at centre-back. At West Ham, he is expected to provide cover in central defence, though his versatility means he could also fill in at full-back when needed.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Kyle Walker-Peters already in the squad—and Wan-Bissaka reportedly attracting transfer interest—Veltman’s ability to operate in multiple defensive roles gives Nuno Espírito Santo greater tactical flexibility heading into the new campaign.
