Bradford City Cannot Afford to Rush Transfer Decisions

Graham Alexander disagrées with the club over signing – “they’re intruding into my coaching affairs”, I can’t work with these players!!

Bradford City manager Graham Alexander has emphasised the importance of maintaining patience and discipline as the club approaches the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

With the transfer deadline set for 11pm on September 1, the Bantams are continuing to assess their squad and identify areas that require strengthening. Wing-back remains one of the club’s main priorities, with City particularly keen to add competition on the right side for Josh Neufville.

The situation on the left could also influence their recruitment plans. Tyreik Wright’s injury status is expected to play an important role in determining whether Bradford decide to bring in another left-sided player. The club does not want to make unnecessary additions, but Wright’s availability could force them to reconsider their options.

Central midfield is another position that has been monitored by the club. However, Alexander indicated that he is currently satisfied with the four midfield options already available to him. The Bradford boss even turned down an opportunity to bring in a potential midfielder last week, highlighting his determination to avoid signing players simply for the sake of increasing squad numbers.

Alexander has repeatedly stressed that Bradford will not allow the pressure of the transfer deadline to force them into making poor decisions.

The City boss explained that there is always pressure for clubs to complete their business quickly and have their squads settled as early as possible. However, his previous experience has taught him that rushing recruitment can create problems later in the season.

According to Alexander, bringing players in too hastily can have consequences, particularly when a new signing struggles to establish himself as a regular starter. With competition for places already strong, adding players who are unlikely to feature consistently could potentially hinder their development and create unnecessary complications within the squad.

He believes recruitment decisions must be made because they are genuinely right for the team rather than simply to satisfy supporters, fill a position on paper or calm concerns surrounding the squad.

Alexander pointed back to his first transfer window as Bradford City manager in January 2024 as an example of his approach. During that window, he made just two additions, goalkeeper Sam Walker and striker Calum Kavanagh.

Rather than making several signings in a short period, Alexander wanted to properly assess the players already at the club and understand what he had available. He felt that bringing in another six or seven players at that stage would have made it more difficult to identify the team’s genuine weaknesses.

That cautious approach allowed City to reach the end of the season with a much clearer understanding of what needed to be addressed during the following summer transfer window.

Alexander’s recruitment philosophy is based on making logical and carefully considered decisions wherever possible. He accepts that circumstances can sometimes force clubs to take risks, particularly when deadlines are approaching, but he insists that financial limitations and the long-term needs of the squad must always be taken into consideration.

For Alexander, signing a player simply because they are available is not enough. He wants to have a clear understanding of where a potential recruit fits within his system, how they would compete for a position and what they can contribute to the team.

The manager believes the worst possible outcome would be to sign a player who is unlikely to seriously challenge for a place in the starting XI. Such a move could leave Bradford with an unnecessarily large squad while doing little to improve the team’s overall quality.

Despite his reluctance to rush, Alexander acknowledges that Bradford still need to strengthen before the window closes. He expects the next four or five months to provide a significant challenge and believes additional players will be required to give the squad enough depth and competition.

The message from the Bradford boss is therefore clear: City are still looking to strengthen, particularly in the wing-back positions, but they will not panic-buy simply because the transfer deadline is approaching. Any late additions must fit the club’s financial structure, improve competition within the squad and, most importantly, make sense for the team’s long-term ambitions.
