Sheffield Wednesday Fans Hopeful as James Bord Takeover Timeline Surfaces Amid EFL Delays
Sheffield Wednesday’s ownership saga appears to be moving closer to a resolution, with a potential timeline emerging for James Bord’s bid to take control of the club, though significant hurdles remain.
The Owls’ relegation was confirmed over the weekend, ending a turbulent season. However, supporters still have reasons to remain cautiously optimistic about the club’s long-term future. Since the conclusion of Dejphon Chansiri’s era and the administration that followed, much of the season has been dominated by speculation over Bord’s potential takeover.
The proposed acquisition is estimated to cost over £30 million, but approval from the English Football League (EFL) is still pending. Bord’s bid is subject to the Owners’ and Directors’ Test, as well as other regulatory checks required to finalize the sale. Adding to the complexity, Bord is currently facing legal action from Jonathan Cohen, which has created additional uncertainty. Despite these challenges, sources suggest that the takeover could reach a conclusion before the end of the 2025/26 Championship season.
Emerging Timeline for the Takeover
Ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s recent defeat at Bramall Lane, reports indicated that the EFL could take up to six weeks to complete the necessary tests and checks on Bord’s bid.
Patrick McKenna, a resident Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, shared his perspective on the latest developments with Football League World:
“When it comes to the takeover, I stopped trusting timelines a long time ago. With all the due diligence involved, it’s impossible to know exactly when things will be finalized. Whether it goes through or not is ultimately up to the EFL. As fans, we’re just desperate for it to be sorted as soon as possible.”
He added: “I’m not paying attention to estimated dates like ‘six weeks.’ What matters is a brighter future for the club and a successful takeover, whenever that may happen. That’s all we can hope for right now.”
Former Star Carl Palmer Calls for Positive Change
Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer, who made 229 appearances for the club, has also weighed in on the situation. He has urged for “good new owners” to take over and help restore stability and success to the club.
Interestingly, Palmer also expressed support for Sheffield United’s potential promotion via the play-offs under Chris Wilder, calling it “great for Sheffield.” This highlights the delicate balance for fans who want progress off the pitch for Wednesday, while keeping an eye on their city rivals’ fortunes.
