Bradford City have given the green light for midfielder Tommy Leigh to depart on loan, with League Two side Bristol Rovers set to secure his services before the transfer deadline. The move comes as the Bantams continue to reshape their squad while maintaining momentum in their League One promotion push.

Although Leigh has found regular starting opportunities hard to come by this season, he has still played an important supporting role for Graham Alexander’s side. The midfielder has featured 16 times across Bradford City’s League One campaign, contributing valuable depth and experience despite limited minutes.

Bristol Rovers Step Up Rebuild Efforts

According to transfer insider Pete O’Rourke, Leigh is expected to leave Valley Parade imminently and join Bristol Rovers, who are battling to pull clear of the League Two relegation zone. The Pirates are in the midst of a significant squad overhaul under manager Steve Evans and see Leigh as a key addition to strengthen their midfield options.

Leigh joined Bradford City just over a year ago from MK Dons and was instrumental during their promotion-winning campaign. His ability to play direct, particularly with accurate long balls into attacking areas, proved decisive in crucial moments—most notably when Antoni Sarcevic capitalised on his distribution to seal automatic promotion in dramatic fashion.

Midfield Competition Limits Opportunities at Valley Parade

Bradford’s January recruitment has intensified competition in central areas. The club have added Oxford United loanee Louie Sibley and Newcastle United’s Joe White, further bolstering an already competitive midfield group. As a result, opportunities for Leigh have become increasingly limited.

Graham Alexander has also begun to rely more heavily on the partnership of Max Power and Jenson Metcalfe, a pairing that has brought consistency and balance to the side. With several other players capable of operating in central midfield, Bradford appear comfortable allowing Leigh to seek regular football elsewhere.

Despite reported interest from Championship clubs, Leigh is expected to remain in West Yorkshire for now, with a short-term move to Bristol Rovers viewed as the best solution for all parties involved.

A Potential Key Piece for Steve Evans

Leigh will arrive at the Memorial Stadium as Steve Evans continues to put his stamp on the Bristol Rovers squad. His versatility—being able to operate both in midfield and in more advanced roles—could prove crucial as the Pirates fight to preserve their League Two status.

While it remains to be seen exactly how he will be utilised, there is optimism that Leigh can rediscover the attacking threat he displayed during his time at Accrington Stanley. If he can replicate that form, Rovers may have secured a shrewd and impactful loan signing.

Further Exits Could Follow at Bradford City

Bradford City may feel satisfied with their January business so far, but additional departures are not being ruled out. Several players appear to be on the fringes of the first-team picture, making further exits a realistic possibility before the window closes.

Neill Byrne and Calum Kavanagh have already moved on in the past week, adding to earlier departures that included Tom McIntyre, Alex Pattison and Andy Cook. Meanwhile, Nick Powell and George Lapslie have both struggled for consistent game time—Powell, in particular, has not featured since Bradford’s EFL Cup clash against Newcastle United.

Neither player has fully adapted to the demands of League One, and as the Bantams aim to establish themselves as a stable presence at this level, trimming fringe players from the squad could be a necessary step in their long-term plans.
