Rotherham United have been dealt another significant blow in their fight to remain in League One, with manager Lee Clark now forced to cope without an important member of his squad at a crucial stage of the season.

Clark, who recently stepped in following the departure of Matt Hamshaw, faces an extremely difficult challenge as he attempts to guide the South Yorkshire club away from relegation danger. The Millers currently find themselves nine points adrift of safety, although they do hold two games in hand over their rivals. However, their recent form has done little to inspire confidence, as they are winless in their last five matches and have suffered back-to-back defeats.

As the team prepares for their final eight fixtures of the campaign, Clark’s task has become even more complicated due to injury concerns. First-choice goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has been sidelined with a shoulder problem, ruling him out of selection for the time being. While the exact length of his absence has not yet been confirmed, the injury leaves Rotherham short of experienced options between the posts.

With Dawson unavailable, the responsibility now falls solely on Ted Cann, who is currently the only senior goalkeeper fit for selection. This adds further pressure on both Cann and the team as they head into a decisive period of the season.

Dawson, 30, had been Rotherham’s primary goalkeeper for much of the campaign, making 31 league appearances. Despite a number of inconsistent performances, he has still managed to maintain a respectable average rating of 6.9 on Sofascore, making him one of the better-performing players in the squad overall.

However, his position in the starting lineup came under scrutiny following a costly mistake in a match against Doncaster Rovers. That error ultimately led to him being dropped in favour of Cann, and Dawson had since been limited to a place on the bench for the past seven matches prior to his injury.

Statistically, Dawson has conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game this season while making around three saves per match, totaling 93 saves in the league. These figures reflect both his individual efforts and the defensive struggles of a Rotherham side that appears increasingly likely to face relegation.

The Doncaster match, in particular, highlighted his dip in form, as he recorded a low rating of 5.9 and was directly at fault for a goal. Although he had been waiting for an opportunity to reclaim his spot in the starting eleven, this latest injury setback may now prevent him from featuring again before the end of the season.

With time running out and results urgently needed, Rotherham United must now push forward without one of their key players, making an already daunting survival mission even more challenging.
