Jeremy Lin Reflects on Knicks Exit, Admits Departure Still Brings Regret
Former New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin has reflected on the dramatic end of his time in New York, admitting that leaving the franchise during the peak of the “Linsanity” era is a decision he sometimes looks back on with regret.
Lin became one of the biggest stories in global sport during the 2011–12 NBA season when a series of sensational performances transformed the undrafted point guard into an overnight superstar. His electrifying run with the Knicks quickly captured the imagination of fans around the world and turned Madison Square Garden into the center of the basketball universe.
The stretch, famously dubbed “Linsanity,” saw Lin deliver a string of memorable performances, including multiple high-scoring games and clutch moments that revived excitement around the Knicks during that season.
However, the fairytale chapter came to an abrupt end in the summer of 2012 when Lin signed with the Houston Rockets after the Knicks declined to match the offer sheet presented to the young guard.
Looking back on the situation years later, Lin has acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding his departure were complicated and emotionally charged. The former guard admitted that decisions made early in a career can sometimes feel rushed, especially when fame, expectations and business realities collide almost overnight.
Lin explained that leaving the franchise which gave him his breakthrough remains something he occasionally reflects on, particularly considering the deep connection he developed with the Knicks fanbase during that unforgettable run.
At the time, many supporters hoped Lin would become the long-term face of the franchise. His sudden exit therefore came as a disappointment to large sections of the fanbase, who had embraced the underdog story that made him one of the most popular players in New York.
Despite moving on to play for several teams throughout his professional career, Lin’s legacy in New York has endured. His remarkable rise during the “Linsanity” era is still remembered as one of the most thrilling and unexpected moments in modern Knicks history.
Lin went on to enjoy a well-traveled career in the NBA, including stints with teams such as the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks, before winning an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.
Even after the passage of time, the brief but unforgettable period of “Linsanity” continues to hold a special place in Knicks folklore — and Lin’s connection with New York fans remains strong.
