The New York Mets made a roster move over the weekend, designating veteran reliever Luis García for assignment. According to his MLB transactions log, the 39-year-old right-hander was officially released by the National League East club on Wednesday afternoon, making him a free agent.
A 14-year Major League veteran, García began his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013 and has since played for nine different teams. The Mets signed him during the offseason to a one-year, $1.75 million deal, but the partnership did not deliver the expected results.
In limited action, García struggled, giving up five earned runs and 11 hits across just 6.1 innings. This came shortly after a strong finish to the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Angels.
Despite the rough stint in New York, he may still attract interest from other organizations looking for bullpen depth, either at the major league level or in the minors, as the sample size with the Mets was small.
García has never been selected as an All-Star and has primarily served as a late-inning reliever throughout his career, appearing in over 600 games.
