Bosun Lawal has outlined his ambitions for the coming year at Stoke City after a challenging yet promising spell that has highlighted both his talent and the physical setbacks he continues to overcome.

Having joined Stoke from Celtic FC in the summer of 2024 for a fee just under £1 million, Lawal arrived with high expectations. However, his first season was largely disrupted by a stress fracture in his back, limiting his ability to make an immediate impact. Despite that difficult start, he began the current campaign in impressive fashion, quickly establishing himself in a centre-back role. His early performances were strong enough to earn him a nomination for Championship Player of the Month, as he played a key role in helping Stoke compete near the top of the table.

Unfortunately, his momentum was halted by a hamstring injury at the end of September. From that point on, his season became fragmented, as he not only dealt with further injury setbacks—including another hamstring issue in February—but also had to adapt to playing in different positions to cover for injured teammates. These interruptions have left him feeling as though he is still catching up and striving to fully demonstrate his capabilities.

Approaching his 23rd birthday, Lawal is now focused on making the next 12 months count for both club and international football. While he has always maintained confidence in his technical ability, he acknowledges that proving his physical resilience has been a major challenge. He emphasized that staying fit, strong, and injury-free is now a central priority, and he is committed to improving this through discipline in his daily routine—maintaining professionalism, taking care of his body, and avoiding unnecessary strain outside football.

His main objective moving forward is simple: to play regularly, remain consistent, and be available for selection as often as possible. Lawal feels a sense of responsibility to repay the faith shown in him by the club and its supporters, particularly after the time he has spent sidelined. He remains determined to justify his place in the squad and prove why he was brought to the club.

Now back to full fitness, Lawal could play a crucial role in Stoke’s upcoming fixtures, especially with defensive options limited due to injuries and suspensions. He has spoken about the demanding nature of the Championship, describing it as a league that requires constant physical and mental readiness. While he does not rely solely on his physical strength, he takes pride in it and uses it effectively to handle the intensity of competition.

His performances at club level have also opened doors internationally. Lawal recently made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland national football team, coming on as a substitute in a friendly match against North Macedonia in Dublin. Having represented Ireland at every youth level, this moment marked a significant milestone in his career. Although he had hoped to be involved in more competitive fixtures, such as World Cup qualifiers, he still described the experience as fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Looking ahead, Lawal remains optimistic and motivated. Despite the setbacks he has faced, he believes he is progressing in the right direction and is determined to build on his current fitness, deliver consistent performances, and establish himself as a key player for both club and country over the next year.
