Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho has revealed that the club has explored the possibility of re-signing Abu Kamara during every transfer window since the winger’s memorable loan spell at Fratton Park.
While Mousinho stopped short of confirming any ongoing negotiations, he acknowledged that Portsmouth are targeting a wide player with qualities similar to Kamara’s, keeping hopes alive that the 23-year-old could make a return this summer.
Kamara was a standout performer during his season-long loan with Pompey, scoring 10 goals and providing 11 assists as the club secured the League One title. Portsmouth were eager to make the move permanent, but Hull City won the race by signing the former Norwich City winger in a deal worth an initial £3.5 million, with a further £1 million in potential add-ons.
Now, with Kamara no longer a regular starter following Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League, speculation over a return to Fratton Park has intensified. Portsmouth’s sporting director, Rich Hughes, previously admitted the club would be interested if the opportunity arose, fueling optimism among supporters.
Speaking during BBC Radio Solent’s supporters’ forum on Monday, Mousinho initially refused to discuss players under contract elsewhere, insisting he would not comment on Kamara or Jesper Ceesay.
However, when pressed further, the Portsmouth boss responded with a smile, admitting the Blues have attempted to bring Kamara back whenever the transfer rules allowed.
He explained that previous windows made a deal impossible because Kamara had already represented two clubs in the same season. With those restrictions no longer an issue this summer, Mousinho hinted that the situation could be different, saying the transfer window presents another opportunity and adding, “Who knows?”
His comments have only increased speculation that Portsmouth could yet launch another bid to reunite with one of the club’s most popular recent loanees.
