Sammie Szmodics has reunited with former manager John Eustace at Derby County after a challenging period at Ipswich Town. Szmodics enjoyed the best season of his career just two years ago at Blackburn, where he scored 27 league goals and helped the club secure survival under Eustace, who later left Blackburn for Derby County.
Since joining Ipswich, Szmodics has struggled for consistent game time. Last season, he scored seven goals and provided two assists in 23 appearances, but injuries and team selection issues limited his impact, with only one goal and eight starts in 18 games following Ipswich’s relegation.
Derby County secured Szmodics on a loan deal, beating interest from clubs such as Wrexham and Stoke City. The temporary move allows for the possibility of a permanent switch in the summer, with Derby’s squad currently accommodating the loan slots available.
Reuniting with Eustace is expected to bring out the best in Szmodics again. At Derby, he can be deployed as a No.10, a box-to-box midfielder, or cutting in from the left, though his primary role is likely to be in the attacking central position. Szmodics also joins several former Blackburn teammates at Pride Park, including Danny Batth, Dion Sanderson, Lewis Travis, and Andreas Weimann, which could help him settle quickly.
With 48 goals and assists in 134 career appearances, Szmodics will be looking to revive his form and potentially earn a permanent move to Derby ahead of his 31st birthday.
