Scott Wright has headed back north of the border after a difficult spell in England, joining Dundee on a season-long loan as the transfer window drew to a close. The 28-year-old had been with Birmingham City since arriving in the summer of 2024, but injuries and limited opportunities restricted his impact during his time in the Championship.

Wright is no stranger to Dens Park, having previously spent time at Dundee earlier in his career during a loan spell from Aberdeen. That temporary move proved valuable for his development, helping him gain regular senior minutes before he later earned a permanent transfer to Rangers. During his time at Ibrox, Wright featured prominently, making 120 appearances for the Light Blues and collecting major honours, including the Scottish Premiership title, the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.

His move to Birmingham City was seen as a fresh challenge, but a serious knee injury sustained last year halted his momentum and kept him sidelined for almost 12 months. Although he returned to action recently, Wright managed just six minutes of Championship football this season, prompting a search for more consistent game time. The loan switch to Dundee now offers him the chance to get back to regular first-team football in familiar surroundings.

Speaking after completing the move, Wright expressed his excitement at returning to Dens Park, describing the transfer as a chance to rediscover his rhythm and enjoy playing again. He reflected positively on his earlier spell with the club, noting how important it was for his growth as a young player and how much he is looking forward to reconnecting with the Dundee supporters.

Dundee confirmed the signing in an official statement, saying the club were delighted to welcome Wright back on loan from Birmingham City for the remainder of the season, subject to international clearance. They highlighted his previous contribution in Dark Blue, where he recorded three goals and four assists during the 2018/19 campaign. The club also outlined his career path, from progressing through Aberdeen’s academy to success with Rangers and, more recently, being part of Birmingham City’s title-winning squad that earned promotion.

Birmingham City also issued a statement confirming Wright’s departure on loan. The club noted that he made 20 appearances after joining in 2024 before his knee injury curtailed his involvement. Having returned to first-team action last month, Wright now links up with a Dundee side currently sitting ninth in the Scottish Premiership. Birmingham City wished him well for the remainder of the season as he looks to rebuild his form and fitness in Scotland.
