In a candid post‑season reflection, former Red Wings winger Vladimir Tarasenko admitted he’s wrestling with regret over leaving Detroit — and his new situation hasn’t delivered the boost he’d hoped for.
Tarasenko, 33, was traded on June 30, 2025 by Detroit to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for future considerations. In his lone 2024–25 season with Detroit, he recorded 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 80 games.
Despite his credentials — a two‑time Stanley Cup champion, longtime scorer and veteran presence — things haven’t clicked with the Wild. Between adjusting to new systems, locker‑room dynamics, and life after a major change, Tarasenko acknowledged he misses what he left behind.
“Everything felt right in Detroit — the fans, the energy, the locker room familiarity,” he said in a recent interview. “Part of me thought I was chasing a better opportunity. But sitting here now … I realize maybe I was chasing the wrong thing.”
Fans and former teammates have reacted with mixed feelings. Some expressed sympathy, noting the instability many veteran players face when changing teams; others lamented losing a recognizable name, even if his Detroit tenure was short-lived.
For Detroit, the trade helped free up cap space and opened opportunities for younger players — a strategic move by the front office.
For Tarasenko, the coming months will be critical. He’ll need to re-find form in Minnesota — and maybe rediscover what made him a fan‑favourite to begin with.
