He will be missed – £3.5m Southampton player offered St Mary’s exit route – Enjoy your new home

Southampton were particularly active in the transfer market during the summer following their relegation from the Premier League, bringing in several new players as part of a broader effort to rebuild the squad and mount a strong push for immediate promotion. Alongside these signings, the club appointed Will Still as head coach, hoping his leadership would guide them back to the top tier at the first attempt. However, things did not go according to plan. A poor run of results led to Still’s dismissal in November, and many of the new arrivals struggled to make a meaningful impact during the early stages of the season.

The club invested heavily in players such as Finn Azaz, Caspar Jander, Tom Fellows, Léo Scienza, and Damion Downs, but performances have been inconsistent overall. Some signings have failed to secure regular playing time, with Downs, for instance, leaving on loan in January after finding opportunities limited. Regardless of whether Southampton succeed in their current promotion bid, there is a clear need for improved recruitment decisions in the next transfer window.

One player whose future has come into question is Joshua Quarshie. Reports suggest that Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt are keeping a close eye on the young defender ahead of the summer transfer window. Quarshie only joined Southampton last year from Hoffenheim in a deal believed to be worth around £3.5 million, but he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at St. Mary’s.

A return to Germany could appeal to the 21-year-old, especially given his previous loan spells at Fortuna Düsseldorf and Greuther Fürth, where he gained valuable experience in the 2. Bundesliga. Last season, he made a total of 20 appearances across those loan stints, performances that ultimately convinced Southampton to sign him.

Despite being under contract with Southampton until 2029, Quarshie’s first season in England has been disrupted by injuries and a lack of consistent selection. He has made 13 appearances in the Championship so far, with most of those coming earlier in the campaign. Under current manager Tonda Eckert, his involvement has been more limited, with only a handful of appearances, including a brief substitute outing in a 2-0 victory over Oxford United in March.

At present, Southampton sit sixth in the Championship table, level on points with seventh-placed Wrexham, and remain in contention for promotion. They also face a significant test in the FA Cup, with a quarter-final clash against Premier League leaders Arsenal scheduled for early April.

Given Quarshie’s limited role and uncertain standing within the squad, a transfer could be a sensible outcome for both the player and the club. He has yet to make the impact supporters may have expected, and it appears unlikely that his opportunities will increase—especially if Southampton achieve promotion. A move to Eintracht Frankfurt could provide him with a fresh start and more regular football, while also allowing Southampton to recover the fee they initially paid, making it a potentially beneficial solution for all parties involved.
