Reports suggest that Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, is considering the future of the club’s midfield and may play a role in shaping it. According to recent claims, he is expected to recommend Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United as a potential long-term successor at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes has once again delivered an outstanding season for Manchester United, proving to be one of the team’s most influential players. In the current Premier League campaign, he has contributed eight goals and 16 assists, playing a central role in United’s push to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League. Despite his importance to the team, uncertainty surrounds his long-term future, as he has only one year left on his current contract, although the club holds an option to extend it by an additional 12 months.

Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, Manchester United are reportedly prioritizing the signing of a high-profile defensive midfielder, with a budget of around £80 million set aside for that purpose. However, the club is also open to bringing in an additional midfield option to strengthen depth and versatility in the squad.

In this context, Bruno Fernandes is said to favour his fellow Portuguese international Mateus Fernandes as a suitable candidate. The young midfielder is admired for his adaptability, as he is capable of playing in defensive, central, and attacking midfield roles. Interestingly, Mateus has publicly described Bruno as his role model, which could further strengthen the connection between the two players.

Financial pressures could influence West Ham United’s decision regarding the player. The club reportedly recorded losses exceeding £100 million last year, and if they were to suffer relegation, they might be forced to sell key players, including Mateus, who was signed for around £42 million.

Mateus Fernandes, a product of Sporting CP’s academy, joined West Ham from Southampton and has quickly emerged as one of their standout performers this season. Alongside teammates like Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville, he has been a key contributor to the team’s efforts.

At just 21 years old, Mateus has already demonstrated significant promise. Across all competitions, he has registered eight goal contributions in 34 appearances, while maintaining an impressive pass completion rate of 88 percent in league matches. In addition to his technical ability, he has shown strong defensive qualities, averaging 5.5 duels won per game, along with three tackles and five recoveries.

Given his rapid development and well-rounded skill set, Mateus Fernandes is widely regarded as a player with the potential to reach elite levels. Whether or not he remains at West Ham may depend on the club’s fortunes. Relegation could see his price drop, making him a more affordable option for Manchester United, whereas survival in the league could drive his valuation up to between £65 million and £70 million.

Bruno Fernandes, who continues to keep a close eye on talent emerging from his former club Sporting CP, is believed to have been following Mateus’s progress closely. It remains uncertain whether Manchester United will act on his recommendation, but the possibility of a future move cannot be ruled out.
