Wolves are facing a steep uphill battle after a nightmare start to the season that saw the West Midlands club fail to win a league game until early January. However, there are clear signs of progress under Rob Edwards. While the gap to safety still looks daunting, there remains enough time to change the club’s fortunes — and with only days left in the January transfer window, one or two smart additions could make a decisive difference.
Although Wolves’ transfer activity has been limited so far, recent reports suggest the club is eager to strengthen this month as they continue to fight against relegation. On the pitch, Edwards appears to have settled on a more stable defensive setup. A back five has grown increasingly effective in recent weeks, helping Wolves grind out results in the Premier League.
José Sá has reclaimed his place as first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Sam Johnstone, while the centre-back trio of Yerson Mosquera, Santiago Bueno and Ladislav Krejčí have established themselves as regular starters. Club captain Toti Gomes remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, and although Emmanuel Agbadou has been linked with a possible January exit, any late defensive signings are unlikely to disrupt Edwards’ preferred back three for now.
In midfield, Wolves have been linked with a move for former Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes. The England international is currently out of favour at Marseille and has been tipped for a potential loan switch to Molineux. Now 25, Gomes made only a few Premier League appearances at United before moving to France, where he impressed at Lille and later joined Marseille on a free transfer last summer.
His arrival would give Wolves added creativity and control in midfield, providing competition for André and potentially partnering João Gomes in the centre of the pitch. Despite reported interest from clubs such as Napoli, the Brazil international João Gomes is expected to remain at Wolves until the end of the season.
