Birmingham City have agreed to let young midfielder Alfie Chang leave the club once again this season, with the Blues academy graduate set for a return to League Two side Walsall.

Chang had spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Bristol Rovers, but his time there was cut short following the arrival of new manager Steve Evans, who opted to reshuffle his squad as part of a January overhaul. As a result, the 23-year-old has been made available for another temporary switch away from St Andrew’s.

Walsall Reunion Confirmed

As first reported by Pete O’Rourke, Chang is now heading back to Walsall, a club he knows well after spending the latter part of last season on loan at the Bescot Stadium. During that spell, he featured eight times under Mat Sadler and even found the net in the first leg of Walsall’s Play-Off semi-final against Chesterfield. He also played the majority of the final at Wembley, where the Saddlers ultimately fell short against AFC Wimbledon.

Despite being highly regarded within Birmingham City’s academy, Chang has found first-team opportunities hard to come by in recent seasons. He did enjoy a run of regular Championship appearances during the 2022/23 campaign under John Eustace, but his momentum was halted by a serious knee injury that sidelined him for the entirety of the following season.

Midfield Boost for the Saddlers

Walsall have been active in the transfer market this January as they look to strengthen their squad for a renewed push towards promotion. Alongside the permanent signing of Alex Pattison from Bradford City, Chang’s arrival adds much-needed depth to a midfield that has been stretched by injuries.

The Saddlers have struggled to settle on a consistent defensive midfield option, with Brandon Comley recently filling in after Lewis Warrington was ruled out. Those concerns have only increased following confirmation that Jake Hollman will miss the rest of the season after requiring surgery on a hamstring problem.

A Crucial Opportunity for Chang

During his previous stint at Walsall, Chang showed signs of reliability and composure amid a chaotic period for the club, which saw them dramatically slide from a commanding position at the top of League Two into the play-offs. His return is viewed as a sensible move for both player and club as Walsall attempt to reignite their automatic promotion hopes.

With Chang now 23 and his Birmingham City contract set to expire in the summer, this loan spell could prove decisive in shaping his long-term future. The midfielder will be eager to make a strong impression, with the clear aim of earning a permanent move and extending his stay at the Bescot Stadium.
