Inglewood, CA – May 30, 2025 — In a powerful tribute to one of the greatest running backs in NFL history, the Los Angeles Chargers unveiled a life-size bronze statue of LaDainian Tomlinson outside SoFi Stadium on Friday. The emotional ceremony, attended by team legends, current players, fans, and family members, marked a monumental moment in franchise history, cementing Tomlinson’s place as a true icon not just of the Chargers, but of professional football.
The statue, standing nearly seven feet tall atop a black granite pedestal, depicts Tomlinson mid-stride, ball tucked firmly in his left arm and right hand extended in his signature stiff-arm pose. Sculpted by acclaimed sports artist Brian Hanlon, the piece captures the explosiveness, grace, and power that defined Tomlinson’s Hall of Fame career.
Tomlinson, 45, appeared visibly moved as a white cloth was pulled away to reveal the statue for the first time. Cheers erupted from the crowd of hundreds gathered at the stadium’s entrance, many clad in powder blue jerseys with his iconic No. 21.
“Today is not just about honoring my career,” Tomlinson said during his speech. “It’s about recognizing the journey, the teammates who blocked for me, the coaches who believed in me, and the fans who stood by me from San Diego to Los Angeles. This statue belongs to all of us.”
Drafted fifth overall by the Chargers in 2001, Tomlinson went on to redefine the running back position. In just nine seasons with the franchise, he racked up 12,490 rushing yards and 138 rushing touchdowns, both team records. His 2006 season, in which he rushed for 1,815 yards and a then-NFL record 28 touchdowns, earned him the league MVP title and solidified his legacy as one of the all-time greats.
Team owner Dean Spanos spoke fondly of Tomlinson, calling him “the heart and soul of the franchise during a golden era” and “the epitome of a Charger, on and off the field.”
“This statue is more than a tribute,” Spanos said. “It’s a reminder to every young player and every fan of what greatness looks like when talent, work ethic, and humility come together.”
Current players like quarterback Justin Herbert and running back Austin Ekeler were also present at the unveiling. Ekeler, who has often spoken of Tomlinson as an inspiration, shared that growing up, “LT was the reason I wanted to wear the number 21. He showed us how to be professionals and how to lead with class.”
The event also included video tributes from former teammates like Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates, as well as heartfelt messages from opponents who admired Tomlinson’s game from across the line of scrimmage. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking in a pre-recorded segment, called the honor “a fitting tribute for one of the most electrifying and respected players in league history.”
The unveiling comes at a time when the Chargers are working to reconnect with their historic roots after relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017. Though the move was controversial, Tomlinson has remained a unifying figure, bridging the gap between generations of fans.
In the days leading up to the ceremony, the team launched a fan appreciation campaign that included special edition merchandise, digital retrospectives of Tomlinson’s greatest games, and even a youth football clinic hosted in his name.
“This statue will stand as a beacon of inspiration,” said head coach Jim Harbaugh. “Every time our players walk into SoFi Stadium, they’ll see LT out front and remember the standard he set — a standard we aim to live up to every day.”
As the sun set over the stadium and the crowd began to disperse, many lingered near the statue, taking photos and sharing stories about their favorite Tomlinson moments — the game-winning runs, the goal-line leaps, the tearful post-game speeches.
For longtime fan Maria Estrada, who traveled from San Diego with her son for the event, the statue was more than a symbol. “LT was our hero,” she said. “Seeing this statue — it makes me feel like he’s still running down that field for all of us.”
With the monument now a permanent fixture outside SoFi Stadium, LaDainian Tomlinson’s legacy continues — cast in bronze, etched in hearts, and forever running into the annals of greatness.
