Brighton are reportedly demanding a significant fee for Jan Paul van Hecke as Chelsea emerge as strong contenders for his signature in what is shaping up to be a Premier League transfer battle.
Van Hecke has established himself as a key figure in Brighton’s defence during the 2025/26 season. His passing ability has been a major asset in their build-up play, highlighted by more than 1,780 completed passes and around 2,671 minutes of game time. Beyond his role in possession, he has also contributed in attack, scoring three goals and providing two assists, including a notable performance in Brighton’s 2–1 win over Liverpool.
Defensively, he has played a major part in Brighton keeping nine clean sheets this season, showing his importance in maintaining stability in a team that often plays an aggressive, transition-heavy style. His strength in covering large spaces, combined with his leadership qualities and communication on the pitch, has increased his reputation as one of the more reliable defenders in the Premier League.
Due to his performances and growing influence, Chelsea are said to be interested in bringing him in, especially as they look to sign defenders who are already proven in English football. Reports suggest Brighton have set their valuation at around £50 million for the Dutch centre-back, who was originally signed from NAC Breda for about £2 million several years ago.
If a transfer were to happen, Van Hecke is viewed as a player who could bring balance to Chelsea’s defence. He is seen as a calming presence who could complement more aggressive defenders like Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill, potentially helping to stabilise Chelsea’s backline.
However, the main obstacle remains the high asking price, with Brighton unwilling to let him leave cheaply given his importance to the squad and his long-term contract.
