West Ham goalkeeper Finlay Herrick has shared his one regret following his senior debut against Leeds United.
Herrick made his first appearance for West Ham during their FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Leeds on Sunday. He came on late in extra time, replacing Alphonse Areola after the French keeper was forced off with an injury.
The young goalkeeper didn’t face any shots until the match went to penalties, where he created a moment he will never forget.
Although Herrick has been widely praised for his composed display, he admitted there is one aspect of the game he wishes had gone differently.
He was thrilled to finally get his chance, especially with Mads Hermansen unavailable. However, he was disappointed that he couldn’t do more to help the team reach the semi-finals.
He said he would have loved to contribute more, as playing at Wembley in the semi-final would have meant a lot to everyone at the club.
One of the standout moments of his performance was saving a penalty from Joel Piroe, which is likely to be remembered as one of West Ham’s highlights this season.
Despite that, the 20-year-old was frustrated that he couldn’t stop any of Leeds’ other penalty attempts.
He admitted he is quite hard on himself and felt he could have done better with at least one of them, but described the feeling of saving the first penalty as incredible.
Many West Ham fans believe he should focus on that positive moment rather than his disappointment, especially since he handled the pressure well and exceeded expectations with his confident performance.
