Former Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill is reportedly close to making his stay at Blackburn Rovers permanent after successfully helping the club avoid relegation from the Championship. Although O’Neill had previously stated that any long-term arrangement would depend on the right conditions being in place for himself, Blackburn, and the Northern Ireland national team, it now appears that an agreement has been reached.
O’Neill initially joined Blackburn in mid-February on a short-term basis during a difficult period for the club. Under his leadership, Blackburn managed to secure their Championship status, eventually finishing 20th in the table and ending the season five points above the relegation zone. His impact at Ewood Park seems to have convinced the club hierarchy that he is the right person to lead the team forward.
According to reports, O’Neill is expected to step down from his position as Northern Ireland manager in order to fully commit to Blackburn. He is believed to be preparing to sign a three-year contract with the Lancashire club. As part of the agreement, Blackburn are expected to pay compensation to the Irish Football Association because O’Neill’s contract with Northern Ireland was originally due to continue until 2028.
In addition to securing O’Neill’s services, Blackburn are also reportedly planning to strengthen the club’s management structure. The board is said to be willing to appoint an experienced assistant manager to work alongside him and provide financial backing in the transfer market this summer so improvements can be made to the squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Following the conclusion of the season, O’Neill took a short holiday but was eager to settle discussions regarding his future quickly. He also wanted clarity on the club’s retained list and preparations for the upcoming season. Speaking after Blackburn’s final match, he explained that everyone involved needed time to reset after a demanding few months, especially as he had spent three months living away from home. However, he admitted that he had grown very fond of Blackburn because of the club’s potential, its history, and the people working there every day.
O’Neill also expressed satisfaction with having achieved the objective he was brought in for — keeping Blackburn in the Championship. He emphasized that survival had been the primary target and said he was pleased the team had managed to accomplish it.
The experienced manager previously left Stoke City in August 2022 before returning to coach Northern Ireland, a role in which he guided the national side into the qualifying play-offs for this summer’s World Cup. Now, it appears his future is set to remain in club football with Blackburn Rovers.
