Brighton have shattered their transfer record by completing the £50 million signing of highly rated Croatian defender Luka Vušković from Tottenham.
The 19-year-old has successfully passed his medical, signed a five-year contract, and will now link up with Fabian Hürzeler’s squad ahead of a campaign in which Brighton will compete in both the Premier League and the UEFA Conference League.
The move is widely viewed as a major statement of intent by the Seagulls, with Vušković considered one of the brightest young central defenders in world football. European giants Barcelona and Real Madrid were both reportedly monitoring his progress before Brighton secured his signature.
This marks the eighth occasion Brighton have broken their transfer record since earning promotion to the Premier League in 2017.
Davy Pröpper (2017 – Around £9m from PSV)
The Dutch midfielder became Brighton’s record signing when he arrived from PSV Eindhoven in 2017 for approximately £9 million. During his four seasons at the club, Pröpper made 121 appearances and established himself as a reliable presence in midfield before leaving in June 2021 for an undisclosed fee.
Just six months after his departure, Pröpper announced his retirement from professional football, citing a loss of motivation. He later made a brief comeback with his boyhood club Vitesse, but persistent knee problems forced him to retire once again. Renowned for his composure and technical quality, Pröpper is remembered as an elegant midfielder who brought intelligence and style to Brighton’s engine room.
