Portsmouth have been handed a potentially positive update in their pursuit of Gustavo Caballero after the winger’s agent revealed that the player’s priority is to remain in European football.
Caballero is set to return to Brazilian club Santos after his loan spell at Fratton Park ended, but his representatives have indicated that they are already exploring options to keep him in Europe rather than returning to play in Brazil.
Speaking to Paraguayan radio outlet Urbana Sports, agent Diego Serrati said: “Gustavo Caballero has to return to Santos, but our intention is for him to continue in Europe. We are working towards that.”
While the comments stop short of confirming a return to Portsmouth, they do leave the Championship side firmly in the race for his signature.
Head coach John Mousinho is understood to be keen on bringing the Paraguay international back for the 2026/27 campaign after being impressed by his performances during last season.
Santos remain in control of the situation, however. Portsmouth’s previous exclusive option to sign Caballero permanently has expired, forcing the club to reopen negotiations with the Brazilian outfit.
Reports have suggested Santos value the winger at around £2.5 million (€2.9m). Pompey are believed to be hoping for a reduced fee, while Santos have been reluctant to lower their demands.
The Brazilian club had hoped Caballero’s participation with Paraguay at the World Cup would increase his market value. However, his impact at the tournament was limited.
Paraguay progressed to the last 16 before being eliminated by France, but Caballero featured for only 94 minutes across the competition, making substitute appearances against Germany and France.
Even so, his camp remains focused on securing another move within Europe, offering Portsmouth renewed hope. Having already settled into English football and adapted to Mousinho’s style, a return to Fratton Park would appear to make sense.
However, Serrati’s comments suggest the player’s preference is Europe in general rather than Portsmouth specifically, leaving the door open for interest from elsewhere.
Championship rivals and clubs in Scotland have previously been linked with Caballero, meaning Portsmouth could face competition if they cannot strike a deal with Santos.
Although Fratton Park may still represent the most logical destination, Portsmouth must now convince Santos to sell before another European club steps in.
