Middlesbrough are making significant progress in their efforts to strengthen the left side of their defence, with the Championship club advancing talks over a deal for United States international Max Arfsten while also keeping Greek-based defender James Penrice firmly on their shortlist.

After falling short of promotion last season despite reaching the Championship play-off final, Boro are determined to reinforce key areas of their squad ahead of the new campaign. New manager Kim Hellberg has identified the left-back position as one of his top priorities, believing improvements there could prove crucial in the club’s push for promotion.

Last season, Matt Targett filled the role on loan from Newcastle United and became an important figure in Middlesbrough’s backline. However, the experienced defender is now a free agent and appears unlikely to return to the Riverside Stadium, with Hull City and West Ham United both reportedly interested in signing him.

As a result, Middlesbrough have turned their attention to alternative options, with Columbus Crew star Max Arfsten emerging as their preferred target. Discussions between the clubs are understood to be progressing positively, with growing optimism that an agreement can be reached in the coming weeks.

Arfsten has developed into one of Major League Soccer’s standout young talents since joining Columbus Crew in 2022. The 21-cap United States international is valued for his versatility, being equally comfortable operating as a left-back or further forward on the wing. His attacking qualities have made him one of the league’s most effective wide players, contributing an impressive 20 goals and 20 assists across 112 appearances for the MLS side.

Middlesbrough believe Arfsten’s pace, creativity and willingness to attack would provide an added dimension to their style of play, while also offering greater balance down the left flank.

Despite their strong interest in Arfsten, Middlesbrough are also monitoring James Penrice as another potential solution. The 27-year-old Scottish defender currently plays for AEK Athens after making the move from Hearts and is viewed as a dependable, experienced option capable of making an immediate impact in the Championship.

However, securing Penrice’s signature may prove more difficult. Blackburn Rovers are also actively pursuing the defender, while Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have admired him for some time, although they have yet to make an official move.

Strengthening the left-back position has become increasingly important for Middlesbrough following Targett’s departure. The club’s existing options have struggled to consistently deliver due to form and fitness concerns, while highly-rated youngster Finley Munroe is still developing and has yet to establish himself at senior level.

Hellberg is eager to avoid another frustrating campaign in which Middlesbrough come close to promotion without achieving it. Reinforcing the defence, particularly on the left side, is viewed as a major step toward building a squad capable of sustaining a serious challenge for Premier League promotion.

Although both Arfsten and Penrice remain on Middlesbrough’s radar, it is considered unlikely that the club will sign both players, as each would expect regular first-team football. At present, Arfsten appears to be the leading candidate, with negotiations reportedly moving in a positive direction as Boro continue their summer recruitment drive.
