Coventry City Remain Optimistic About Securing Carl Rushworth Transfer as Brighton Stay Open to Negotiations

Coventry City remain determined to bring goalkeeper Carl Rushworth back to the club this summer and are increasingly confident that a deal can be completed before the transfer window closes on 3 September. Although their opening offer was rejected, the Sky Blues are preparing to return with an improved bid as they continue negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rushworth, now 25, enjoyed an outstanding spell with Coventry last season and played a pivotal role in the club’s successful campaign that ultimately resulted in promotion to the Premier League. His impressive displays made him one of the standout performers in the Championship, and Coventry are eager to make his return a priority ahead of the new top-flight season.

With several weeks still remaining in the transfer window, Coventry are willing to remain patient if it increases their chances of reaching an agreement with Brighton. Club officials are prepared to continue discussions throughout the summer rather than rush into a deal, believing persistence could eventually produce the desired outcome.

Former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, explained that manager Frank Lampard has identified Rushworth as his number one transfer target for the summer and remains fully committed to bringing the goalkeeper back to the CBS Arena.

Brighton are understood to be open to selling Rushworth, but only if their valuation is met. The Seagulls rejected Coventry’s opening proposal, which was believed to be worth around £20 million, making it clear they expect a higher fee before considering a sale.

To complete the transfer, Coventry may need to break their existing transfer record. Despite the financial challenge, the club are reportedly putting plans in place to ensure they can meet Brighton’s demands and secure the goalkeeper’s signature before the deadline.

Coventry Preparing Improved Bid for Rushworth

Football Insider previously reported that Coventry are willing to increase their offer beyond the initial £20 million proposal in an effort to convince Brighton to sell. The Championship club hopes ongoing negotiations will eventually result in a compromise over the transfer fee that satisfies both sides.

Talks between Coventry, Brighton and the player’s representatives are believed to have continued, with all parties still working towards a potential agreement.

Rushworth’s performances throughout last season only strengthened Coventry’s desire to re-sign him. His consistency, leadership and match-winning displays earned him the Championship Player of the Season award, highlighting just how influential he was during the promotion-winning campaign.

Speaking about the situation, Mick Brown stressed that Rushworth has always been Coventry’s leading target this summer.

According to Brown, the club’s interest has never been in doubt because of the huge impact the goalkeeper made during his previous spell. He believes bringing Rushworth back was the obvious decision, particularly once it became clear Brighton were prepared to consider offers.

Brown also suggested that Coventry’s opening £20 million bid was never likely to meet Brighton’s expectations and therefore its rejection came as little surprise. However, he insisted the failed bid would not discourage the club from continuing negotiations.

He expects Coventry and Frank Lampard to keep pushing for an agreement, regardless of whether the transfer is completed immediately or later in the window. In his view, there are very few goalkeepers of Rushworth’s quality currently available, making him worth the significant investment.

Brown added that if Coventry truly want to secure one of the best goalkeepers available, they may ultimately have no choice but to meet Brighton’s asking price.

Coventry Exploring Alternative Goalkeeping Targets

Although Rushworth remains their preferred option, Coventry are also planning for the possibility that negotiations may not reach a successful conclusion.

The recruitment team has been monitoring several goalkeepers from both England and across Europe to ensure the club has alternative options if a deal for Rushworth falls through. Coventry are also considering signing another goalkeeper who could provide additional competition and depth, even if Rushworth eventually joins.

One player who has emerged as a possible alternative is Everton goalkeeper Mark Travers.

Football Insider reported earlier this month that Coventry are interested in the Republic of Ireland international, whose contract reportedly contains a release clause that could make a transfer more straightforward.

Travers joined Everton from Bournemouth last summer in a deal worth around £4 million. Should he leave this summer, Everton would likely seek a similar fee or potentially a higher amount, allowing the club to make a profit on their investment.

Since arriving at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, Travers has found first-team opportunities limited due to England international Jordan Pickford’s status as the club’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. As a result, he has featured only twice for the Toffees, with both appearances coming in the Carabao Cup.

Despite exploring other options, Coventry’s primary focus remains on completing a deal for Carl Rushworth. Club officials believe he is the ideal goalkeeper to lead them into their return to the Premier League, and they are expected to continue working behind the scenes to reach an agreement with Brighton before the summer transfer window closes.
