Fortress Fratton has long been regarded as one of Portsmouth’s greatest strengths, and now the club’s passionate fanbase has earned recognition from abroad.
A ranking by FootballOn has named Fratton Park the best stadium atmosphere in the Championship for the 2025-26 season. The assessment focused on factors such as noise levels, passion, chants, intimidation, and overall matchday energy.
Fratton Park came out on top, with FootballOn describing it as the “king of atmospheres.” The outlet praised the historic ground for its compact design, relentless vocal support, and electric environment that creates a unique experience for players and supporters alike.
Portsmouth’s home narrowly beat Millwall’s The Den to first place, while Ipswich Town’s Portman Road and Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane also featured prominently. Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground rounded out the top five.
Further down the list were West Bromwich Albion’s The Hawthorns, Derby County’s Pride Park, Norwich City’s Carrow Road, Bristol City’s Ashton Gate, and Preston North End’s Deepdale.
FootballOn also highlighted several Championship grounds that struggle to generate a strong atmosphere. Among those mentioned was Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium, alongside the homes of Cardiff City, Coventry City, Leicester City, and Hull City.
Fratton Park’s reputation is nothing new. Over the years, players, managers, and football figures have regularly praised the atmosphere generated by Pompey supporters.
Former Manchester United manager once used Portsmouth as an example of what a vibrant football atmosphere should look like. In 2018, he described Fratton Park as “absolutely incredible” while comparing it to Old Trafford, noting the enthusiasm and intensity of Pompey fans.
Meanwhile, Arsenal legend also spoke fondly of Portsmouth supporters after wearing a Pompey shirt in 2004. Henry recalled how fans sang his name and warmly welcomed him, describing the experience as unlike anything he had encountered elsewhere.
