Bolton Wanderers may find themselves in a strong position to take advantage of Rotherham United’s current difficulties by making a move for striker Sam Nombe during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Rotherham recently moved quickly to bring in experienced manager Lee Clark—formerly of Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City—on a short-term deal that runs until the end of the season. However, Clark faces a significant challenge, as the team currently sits six points away from safety with only nine matches left to play in League One. Their situation leaves them firmly at risk of relegation.

Despite the club’s struggles, Sam Nombe has stood out as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign. The 27-year-old forward has managed to score nine goals in 22 league appearances this season, which is particularly impressive given that he also had to deal with injuries earlier in the campaign.

While Rotherham are battling near the bottom of the table, Bolton have experienced a far more positive season. They are firmly in contention for promotion and have given themselves a realistic chance of returning to the Championship through the play-offs. That said, Steven Schumacher’s side may feel a sense of frustration, as inconsistency has prevented them from seriously challenging the top two teams, Lincoln City and Cardiff City, for automatic promotion.

Interest in Nombe from Bolton is not new. Reports from January suggested that Wanderers were keen on signing the striker, but a deal did not materialize due to Rotherham placing a £2 million valuation on him. Nombe recently reminded Bolton of his quality by scoring twice against them in a 2-2 draw at the New York Stadium, further underlining why he has been on their radar.

With Rotherham now facing the real possibility of relegation, Bolton could potentially revisit their interest and attempt to sign Nombe at a reduced price. Relegation would likely weaken Rotherham’s bargaining position, making a deal more financially viable.

Bolton fan pundit Liam O’Meara has weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Nombe would be a strong addition to the squad. He highlighted the striker’s excellent record at both Exeter City and Rotherham, as well as his consistent ability to perform against Bolton. O’Meara noted that Nombe brings proven quality at League One level and could offer valuable versatility, playing both on the right flank and centrally.

He also pointed out that Nombe could fill a potential gap in the squad, particularly if players like Rob Apter and Amario Cozier-Duberry return to their parent clubs in the summer. However, O’Meara did express one key concern: the financial aspect. At 27 years old, a £2 million transfer fee may be considered too high for Bolton, especially given the club’s need to think about future resale value. From that perspective, investing heavily in a player of Nombe’s age may not represent the best long-term strategy.

Ultimately, any decision regarding a potential transfer is likely to depend heavily on the divisions both clubs find themselves in next season. If Rotherham are relegated to League Two, their asking price for Nombe would likely drop, making the deal more attractive and reducing concerns about resale value.

On the other hand, if Bolton achieve promotion to the Championship, they may set their sights on higher-profile targets. Nombe, while highly effective in League One, has previously struggled to make a major impact at Championship level during spells with Luton Town and Rotherham, which could influence Bolton’s recruitment strategy.

In summary, while Sam Nombe appears to be a strong candidate to strengthen Bolton’s squad, the final decision will hinge on financial considerations and the competitive level both teams will be operating in next season.
