Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou is reportedly on the verge of leaving Fir Park after French club Toulouse reached a compensation agreement to appoint the Danish coach.
Askou had emerged as one of the leading contenders to replace current Celtic boss Martin O’Neill, whose contract expires at the end of the season. The 43-year-old has earned widespread praise for guiding Motherwell into European contention with an attractive, possession-heavy style of football that secured a fourth-place finish.
However, Toulouse appear to have moved ahead in the race for his signature. The Ligue 1 outfit are searching for a manager capable of delivering strong results on a limited budget following the departure of former head coach Carles Martinez Novell. Sporting director Viktor Bezhani is believed to view Askou as the ideal candidate due to his achievements in Scotland.
Transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on X that Toulouse and Motherwell have already agreed financial terms for Askou’s release, with only the final details of his contract still being completed.
Aside from the attraction of managing in the south of France, Toulouse are also said to have impressed Askou with promises of full access to the club’s football resources. Bezhani recently told supporters he wanted a coach capable of maximising potential despite financial limitations, a profile that strongly matches Askou’s reputation.
