Kasper Schmeichel has announced that he will retire from football when his contract with Celtic F.C. expires next month after suffering a serious shoulder injury while representing Denmark last year.

In an emotional message shared on Instagram, the veteran goalkeeper explained that medical advice had left him with little hope of returning to top-level football. He admitted the decision was one of the toughest moments of his life, as football had been part of him since childhood.

Schmeichel reflected on everything he loved about the game — from the dressing room atmosphere and daily hard work to competing for trophies on the biggest stages. He looked back proudly on the many unforgettable achievements of his career, including league and cup triumphs in England and Scotland, as well as Leicester City’s historic Premier League title win.

The former Leicester City F.C. star also spoke warmly about his spell at Celtic, where he helped the club win four trophies in two seasons. Representing Denmark remained one of the greatest honours of his career, especially captaining his country at both the World Cup and European Championship.

Despite refusing to give up hope after the injury, Schmeichel said he had now exhausted every possible option to continue playing. Raised with a mentality of fighting until the very end, he explained that he could only accept retirement after knowing he had tried everything.

The goalkeeper finished by thanking everyone who played a role in his journey — teammates, coaches, medical staff, club employees, and supporters from every club he represented, including Manchester City F.C., Leicester City F.C., Celtic F.C. and many others. Above all, he expressed deep gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout his career.
