Seahawks Linked With 1,023-Yard Super Bowl Champion Running Back as Potential Kenneth Walker Replacement

The Seattle Seahawks could be preparing for a difficult decision this offseason as uncertainty surrounds the future of star running back Kenneth Walker III. After an impressive campaign that culminated in a Super Bowl MVP performance, Walker is set to enter free agency, and there is growing belief that he may have played his final game in Seattle.

Walker is widely regarded as the top running back available in this year’s free-agent class, especially in a market that lacks elite talent at the position. Because of that, the dynamic rusher is expected to command a lucrative contract when negotiations open. While the Seahawks would ideally like to retain him, the expected price tag could prove too steep for the franchise, forcing them to explore more affordable alternatives.

One intriguing option could involve another running back who shares the same first name. ESPN analyst Ben Solak recently suggested that Pittsburgh Steelers free agent Kenneth Gainwell would be an excellent target for Seattle if the team ultimately loses Walker this offseason.

Kenneth Gainwell Emerging as a Potential Target

Solak noted that Gainwell’s versatile skill set could make him a strong fit in several offenses around the league. In particular, he highlighted Seattle as a logical destination where Gainwell could complement current Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet.

“Gainwell seems like a great complement to Jordan Mason in Minnesota or Charbonnet in Seattle,” Solak wrote while discussing potential landing spots for the veteran back.

Although the Minnesota Vikings could also show interest in Gainwell once free agency begins, Seattle may ultimately offer the more attractive situation if contract offers are similar. With a need for backfield depth and a potentially major void if Walker departs, the Seahawks could provide Gainwell with a significant role in their offense.

A More Affordable Replacement

Replacing a player of Walker’s caliber would never be easy, but Gainwell could present a practical solution. One of the biggest advantages is financial. Gainwell is expected to command a far smaller contract than Walker, which would allow Seattle to strengthen other areas of the roster while still adding a productive running back.

During the 2025 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Gainwell delivered a solid campaign on the ground. He rushed for 537 yards and five touchdowns on 114 carries, roughly half of Walker’s rushing production from the same season.

However, where Gainwell truly separates himself is in the passing game. The versatile back proved to be a reliable receiving option, hauling in 73 of his 85 targets for 486 yards and three touchdowns. His ability to contribute both as a runner and a receiver makes him a valuable dual-threat weapon in modern offenses.

By the end of the season, Gainwell had accumulated 1,023 total yards from scrimmage and scored eight combined touchdowns. While those numbers don’t quite match Walker’s explosive output, they demonstrate that Gainwell can still be a highly productive contributor in the right system.

Super Bowl Pedigree and Big-Game Experience

In addition to his statistical production, Gainwell also brings valuable postseason experience. Earlier in his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, he played a role in two Super Bowl runs in 2022 and 2024. During those playoff campaigns, Gainwell showcased his ability to perform under pressure and contribute in key moments.

That championship experience could make him an appealing addition for a Seahawks team hoping to remain competitive in the NFC.

Potential Fit in Seattle’s Backfield

If Seattle ultimately parts ways with Walker, pairing Gainwell with Zach Charbonnet could give the Seahawks a balanced backfield heading into the new season. Charbonnet’s physical running style combined with Gainwell’s receiving ability and versatility could provide offensive coordinators with multiple options in both the rushing and passing game.

While Gainwell may not completely replicate Walker’s star power, his production, versatility, and affordability could make him a smart and strategic addition for Seattle if they need to replace their current starting running back.
