Fowler: ‘Nothing Fast And Firm’ On Rodgers Joining Steelers As Team Remains Waiting
PITTSBURGH, May 31, 2025 — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ pursuit of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers remains in a state of uncertainty, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that there is “nothing fast and firm” regarding Rodgers’ potential move to the team. Despite a six-hour meeting between Rodgers and Steelers officials, including head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan, no agreement has been reached.
Rodgers, 41, became a free agent after his release from the New York Jets in March. While the Steelers have shown interest, Rodgers has also been linked to the New York Giants and, at one point, the Minnesota Vikings. However, sources indicate that the Vikings are unlikely to pursue Rodgers, focusing instead on developing their young quarterback, J.J. McCarthy.
The Steelers have reportedly had contract parameters in place with Rodgers for weeks, but discussions during the recent meeting did not involve financial terms. The meeting was described as an opportunity for both parties to become acquainted, with no immediate expectations for a deal.
As the Steelers await Rodgers’ decision, they have re-signed quarterback Mason Rudolph to a two-year deal. Rudolph, who previously played for the Tennessee Titans, is considered a potential starter if Rodgers does not join the team. The Steelers’ quarterback options also include rookie Will Howard and Skylar Thompson.
In the event that Rodgers declines the Steelers’ offer, the team is reportedly considering Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins as an alternative. Cousins, 36, has a substantial contract, and acquiring him would require the Steelers to absorb a significant portion of his $37.5 million guaranteed salary.
The prolonged uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position has drawn criticism from some quarters. Former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw has publicly criticized the team’s interest in Rodgers, calling the potential signing “a joke” and questioning the logic of bringing in an aging player.
Despite the lack of a definitive answer from Rodgers, the Steelers remain patient, hoping to secure the services of the four-time NFL MVP. As the offseason progresses, the team continues to weigh its options, aiming to solidify its quarterback position ahead of the 2025 season.
