Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is reportedly preparing an ambitious summer rebuild ahead of the club’s return to the Premier League, with former Liverpool FC and Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum emerging as a potential target.

After guiding Coventry back to the top flight for the first time since 2001, Lampard is determined to strengthen his squad with experienced players capable of helping the club avoid an immediate return to the Championship. According to reports from Football Insider, the Sky Blues are considering a move for Wijnaldum once his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq expires this summer.

The 35-year-old Dutch midfielder is believed to be open to a Premier League return, and Coventry reportedly see him as an ideal addition thanks to his leadership, top-level experience and winning mentality. Wijnaldum, who lifted the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019, also showed he still has plenty to offer this season after registering 17 goals and six assists across all competitions for Al-Ettifaq.

Former Coventry striker Clinton Morrison has also backed the club to pursue proven Premier League talent during the transfer window. Speaking to GOAL, Morrison suggested players such as Ross Barkley could fit the profile Coventry need as they prepare for life in the top division.

Morrison stressed the importance of adding experienced players who understand the demands of Premier League football, claiming newly-promoted clubs often need several seasoned professionals to improve their chances of survival.

He also believes Lampard’s reputation and connections within the game could help Coventry attract bigger names this summer, adding that the club may be one of the best-equipped promoted sides to remain in the Premier League next season.
