Coventry City are now preparing to take decisive steps in their pursuit of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth as they look ahead to life in the Premier League following a historic promotion campaign. Under the leadership of Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues have secured a return to England’s top division for the first time in more than 25 years, marking a remarkable achievement after an outstanding season.
Their promotion was confirmed after a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Blackburn Rovers, while they rounded off the campaign in emphatic fashion by defeating Portsmouth 5-1 at home to claim the Championship title. With celebrations now fading, attention has quickly shifted toward preparations for next season and what is expected to be a highly active summer transfer window at the CBS Arena.
Coventry’s hierarchy are fully aware that strengthening the squad will be essential if they are to compete at Premier League level. Lampard, in particular, faces the challenge of preserving the core group of players who delivered promotion while also improving areas that need greater quality and depth. One of the most important positions to address is goalkeeper, and the club have already begun making moves in that department.
Carl Rushworth has emerged as a top priority. The English goalkeeper joined Coventry on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer after Oliver Dovin suffered injury, and he has since become one of the most influential signings Lampard has made. Alongside players such as Matt Grimes, Rushworth has played a key role in Coventry’s successful campaign.
His performances this season have been exceptional. According to statistics from FotMob, no goalkeeper in the Championship has prevented more goals than Rushworth, who has reportedly saved his side from conceding seven goals through his shot-stopping efforts. His consistency, composure, and reliability have made him a major contributor to Coventry’s rise.
Because of this, Coventry are eager to secure him permanently. Reports from journalist Alex Crook suggest that Rushworth’s representatives are expected to hold talks with Coventry in the coming days regarding a possible transfer from Brighton. However, certain developments may need to take place first before negotiations can move forward fully.
Brighton currently have several goalkeepers on their books, including Bart Verbruggen, Jason Steele, James Beadle, and Rushworth, with Beadle and Rushworth spending the season out on loan in the Championship. Verbruggen has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, while Newcastle are also believed to be considering Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford as they plan for the future beyond Nick Pope.
As a consequence, Brighton have reportedly shown interest in other goalkeepers such as Lens’ Robin Risser and Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu. If Brighton bring in another goalkeeper, it could create the opportunity for Rushworth to leave permanently this summer.
Rushworth is also attracting attention elsewhere. Reports indicate that up to six Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation, including Leeds United. That means Coventry may face competition if they want to sign him.
Even so, Coventry’s recent promotion could give them a significant advantage in negotiations. The chance to become first-choice goalkeeper for a newly promoted Premier League side may appeal strongly to Rushworth, and Lampard will be hopeful that the club can use that momentum to complete a deal.
Few people at Coventry will be more determined to finalise the transfer than Lampard himself. Rushworth has been outstanding throughout the season, and securing him permanently would represent a major statement of intent from the Sky Blues as they prepare for their long-awaited return to the Premier League.
At just 24 years old, Rushworth is still developing and is seen as a player with a bright future. Some even believe he has the potential to push for England recognition in the coming years. He has previously gained valuable experience during loan spells with Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City, and Hull City, but this season appears to have been his strongest yet.
Despite coming through Brighton’s system, he has never made a senior appearance for the Seagulls. As a result, Brighton could now profit significantly from selling one of their academy products. Where Rushworth ends up remains uncertain, but Coventry are clearly determined to put themselves at the front of the queue.
