Report: Detroit Red Wings Connected With Unexpected General Manager Candidate.

As the 2026 NHL trade deadline continues to draw nearer, the Detroit Red Wings are emerging as one of the league’s most intriguing teams to monitor. Detroit has firmly established itself as a legitimate buyer, thanks to an outstanding campaign that has placed them among the NHL’s elite. At this stage of the season, the Red Wings boast an impressive 32-16-5 record, which has them sitting second in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.

Detroit’s strong form has fueled growing optimism that the franchise is on track to end its lengthy nine-year absence from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With momentum on their side, the Red Wings are well positioned to strengthen their roster rather than standing pat. That approach is further supported by their financial flexibility, as PuckPedia reports that Detroit has close to $60 million in available cap space heading into the trade deadline.

Armed with both cap room and a contending roster, the Red Wings appear primed to make a meaningful addition. One of their most pressing needs is a reliable, right-shot defenseman who can bring size, experience, and defensive stability. Among the players potentially available on the trade market, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Connor Murphy stands out as a particularly strong fit for Detroit’s needs.

With that in mind, Heavy Sports has floated a trade scenario that would see the Red Wings acquire Murphy from their divisional rivals.

Proposed Trade

Red Wings receive:

– Connor Murphy

Blackhawks receive:

– 2026 second-round draft pick

– 2026 sixth-round draft pick

Connor Murphy Emerging as a Key Trade Target

The Blackhawks currently sit sixth in the Central Division with a 21-23-8 record and remain firmly in the midst of a rebuilding phase. Given their position in the standings, Chicago is widely expected to act as a seller ahead of the deadline. As a result, Murphy—who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer—has generated significant interest around the league.

Murphy’s name has already surfaced on prominent trade boards, including NHL insider Chris Johnston’s latest rankings for The Athletic, where the veteran defenseman was listed at No. 13 among potential trade candidates.

Johnston highlighted Murphy’s value, noting his size, strength, and experience, along with his ability to deliver strong defensive results despite playing on a struggling Blackhawks roster. Johnston also pointed out that Murphy’s expiring contract makes him an appealing and easily movable asset, especially with limited comparable options expected to be available in free agency this offseason.

Given these factors, Detroit would be wise to explore a deal. Murphy would bring a calming veteran presence to the Red Wings’ blue line, particularly on the right side, an area that could benefit from added depth and reliability.

Strong Market Expected for Murphy

Although the Red Wings appear to be a logical landing spot, they would not be alone in their pursuit. Murphy fits the profile of a classic playoff defenseman—big, physical, defensively sound—which makes him an attractive option for contenders across the league. Teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars are among those who could also express interest.

If Detroit were able to land Murphy, he could slot seamlessly onto the team’s bottom pairing alongside Albert Johansson. His defensive instincts and physical play would also make him a valuable addition to the Red Wings’ penalty-killing unit, giving the coaching staff another dependable option in high-leverage situations.

Considering Detroit’s cap flexibility, competitive window, and roster needs, pushing aggressively for Murphy at the trade deadline could prove to be a smart and timely move as the Red Wings look to solidify their status as genuine playoff contenders.
