Portsmouth’s January deadline-day signing has wasted no time making an impression. His superbly taken goal and standout performance in the 3-1 win over Millwall on Saturday has already sparked debate among supporters about the perfect chant for their new Paraguayan favourite.
Not long ago, names like Roque Santa Cruz and José Luis Chilavert were the most recognisable Paraguayan figures to Pompey fans. Now, the 24-year-old winger on loan from Santos is quickly carving out his own reputation at Fratton Park.
His rapid adjustment to Championship football has caught the eye, something he credits to the warm reception he has received since arriving on the south coast. Portsmouth hold an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season, with a clause included in the surprise deal that brought him to the club.
However, the winger made it clear he joined with one eye on the future. Speaking to media in his homeland, Caballero revealed that playing in Europe has always been a long-term ambition — and ultimately, he has his sights set on the Premier League.
Whether that dream is realised with Pompey remains uncertain. If not, he hopes his performances at Fratton Park will open the door elsewhere.
Despite relying on a translator and still adjusting to the language, Caballero says he has settled well both on and off the pitch. He has adapted to playing on the right wing — while also being comfortable on the left — and believes the extra space in English football suits his pace, compared to the tighter marking he experienced in Brazil.
Confident and ambitious, the 24-year-old admits he sees himself “one step away from the best league in the world” and is determined to use this opportunity to secure a move to the Premier League in the near future.
