Something Big – Rotherham United urged to hire 54-y/o ex-Peterborough manager – he’s a promotion winner.

Rotherham United are facing a major period of transition this summer after suffering relegation from EFL League One down to EFL League Two. Their drop to the fourth tier—something they have not experienced since 2013—was officially confirmed following a heavy 3–0 defeat against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.

That result not only sealed Rotherham’s fate but also highlighted the contrasting fortunes of their opponents. Managed by Gary Caldwell, Wigan had been at risk of relegation themselves earlier in the campaign. However, a run of three consecutive wins has now lifted them into contention for a respectable top-half finish instead.

Attention has now turned to Rotherham’s future, particularly the managerial situation. Current head coach Lee Clark is nearing the end of his contract, and his tenure has done little to convince supporters that he is the right person to oversee the club’s rebuilding process. As a result, there is growing expectation that the club could look elsewhere for leadership ahead of next season.

One name that has been suggested is Darren Ferguson, formerly of Peterborough United. The idea has gained traction among supporters, including fan pundit Tom Eyre, who shared his views with Football League World. Eyre admitted that identifying a suitable candidate is challenging given the club’s current situation, but he personally believes Ferguson would be a strong option.

He pointed out that Ferguson has earned respect for his previous work, particularly during his time at Peterborough, where he demonstrated an ability to develop young players and manage squad rebuilds effectively. Although his most recent spell did not go as planned, Eyre suggested that external factors likely played a role. Importantly, Ferguson has experience achieving promotion from League Two, making him a potentially valuable figure for a club aiming for an immediate return to League One.

Eyre also emphasized Ferguson’s leadership qualities, describing him as a demanding and authoritative figure—traits he believes Rotherham currently lack. While he acknowledged that such an appointment may not be realistic, Ferguson remains his preferred choice.

Rotherham’s decline has been one of the more disappointing narratives in the English Football League this season. Not long ago, the club were competing regularly in the EFL Championship, but their latest relegation marks a second drop in just three years. This signals a worrying period for the South Yorkshire side as they attempt to halt their downward trajectory.

Despite their struggles, Rotherham will enter League Two as one of its more prominent clubs based on recent history. However, a successful rebuild will require stability and strong leadership, particularly as they risk losing key players during the upcoming transfer window. One such player is striker Sam Nombe, who has continued to perform consistently in front of goal despite the team’s poor results.

Overall, Ferguson’s track record suggests he could be well-suited to guiding Rotherham through this difficult phase, offering both experience in player development and a proven ability to compete successfully at this level.
