One of the most talked-about stories involving the Detroit Red Wings in recent weeks centers on a reported trade proposal the team made to the Vancouver Canucks for veteran defenseman Tyler Myers.

Myers, 36, originally from Houston, carries a no-move clause in his contract. This clause gives him the power to veto any trade involving him, effectively controlling where he can be sent. According to reports, the Red Wings had offered a second-round draft pick in exchange for Myers, which immediately brought the no-move clause into focus.

Early reports suggested that Myers had turned down Detroit’s offer. Later clarifications revealed that Myers was indeed open to a trade, but he had a preference to join his home-state team, the Dallas Stars. Ultimately, Myers was traded to Dallas in exchange for a second- and fourth-round draft pick, a move that seemed natural for both parties since the Stars were actively looking to strengthen their defensive lineup.

On the Sekeres & Price podcast, TSN analyst Darren Dreger noted that if Dallas had gone in a different direction, Myers likely would have waived his no-move clause and accepted Detroit’s original proposal. This opens up a fascinating “what if” scenario for the Red Wings: had Myers joined Detroit, it could have significantly influenced their strategy at the trade deadline. This includes questions about whether the team still would have pursued other defensemen, such as Justin Faulk, or made different roster adjustments to bolster their blue line.

For fans of the Red Wings, Myers’ situation represents one of the season’s most intriguing storylines. His decision—and the potential shift in Detroit’s defensive plans—could end up being a defining factor depending on how the team finishes the year.
