Aston Villa’s ongoing squad rebuild this summer could result in several familiar faces departing Villa Park as Unai Emery continues to reshape his team ahead of another demanding Premier League campaign.

While much of the attention has focused on the futures of some of Villa’s biggest names, including goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers, another experienced member of Emery’s squad now appears increasingly likely to move on.

Martínez has been repeatedly linked with a potential transfer to Juventus, with the Italian giants exploring options for a new first-choice goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers remains a major target for Arsenal following a breakthrough season in which he developed into one of Villa’s most influential attacking players.

Villa are believed to value Rogers at approximately £130 million, although reports suggest the England international is open to a move to the Emirates Stadium, with negotiations over personal terms reportedly moving closer to completion.

However, alongside these high-profile transfer stories, Ross Barkley’s future has also become a subject of growing discussion, with the midfielder now appearing close to bringing his time at Aston Villa to an end.

Coventry City Step Up Pursuit of Ross Barkley

According to GiveMeSport journalist Sam Cohen, Ross Barkley is currently in advanced discussions over a possible transfer to Coventry City, with negotiations progressing positively as newly promoted Premier League side Coventry look to strengthen their squad.

The Sky Blues, managed by former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard, are preparing for the challenge of competing in the Premier League after securing promotion and are searching for experienced players capable of helping them adapt to top-flight football.

Barkley’s potential move would bring his Aston Villa career to a close after two seasons at the club. His arrival at Villa was initially viewed as a smart piece of recruitment, particularly after he revived his career during his impressive spell at Luton Town.

Villa signed Barkley in 2024 for a reported fee of around £5 million, and the midfielder remains contracted until 2027. However, with Emery looking to refresh his squad and create room for new additions, a departure could benefit both player and club.

Although Coventry are expected to negotiate a reasonable transfer fee, Barkley’s Premier League wages could prove to be the biggest obstacle. Villa may need to be flexible financially if they are determined to complete the sale and avoid losing valuable time during the transfer window.

Barkley’s Career Experience Could Benefit Coventry

Barkley brings a wealth of Premier League experience to the table. Having progressed through Everton’s academy, he quickly established himself as one of English football’s most exciting young midfielders and went on to represent both Everton and the England national team.

During his career, he has also played for Chelsea, Aston Villa, Nice, and Luton Town, earning 33 international appearances for the Three Lions during his peak years.

Although he is no longer the explosive young talent who first broke through at Everton, Barkley has developed into a more mature and intelligent midfielder. His ability to retain possession, carry the ball through midfield areas, create opportunities and contribute in attacking positions remains valuable.

For Coventry City, signing a player of Barkley’s experience could be extremely beneficial as they prepare for life back in the Premier League. His understanding of the demands of top-flight football, combined with his technical ability, could provide important leadership both on and off the pitch.

Injury Problems Limited Barkley’s Villa Impact

Barkley’s second season at Aston Villa was affected by injuries and interruptions that prevented him from building consistent momentum.

He missed the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign due to a personal matter before later suffering a knee injury in November, which kept him unavailable for approximately two months.

Despite those setbacks, Barkley still managed to contribute three goals across all competitions and remained a useful option whenever he was fit and available.

A Potentially Ideal Move Under Frank Lampard

Coventry’s interest in Barkley is understandable, particularly given Frank Lampard’s familiarity with the player’s strengths and style.

Lampard successfully guided Coventry back into the Premier League after winning the Championship title last season, but his next challenge will be building a squad capable of competing against established top-flight teams.

Experience will be crucial for Coventry, and Barkley offers more than a decade of Premier League knowledge. His composure under pressure, ability to progress the ball and willingness to take responsibility in midfield could make him an important figure in Lampard’s plans.

For Aston Villa, the decision will require careful consideration. The club’s midfield options have already been affected by recent changes, including Amadou Onana’s long-term injury setback and the departures of Douglas Luiz and Harvey Elliott following the end of their loan spells.

Nevertheless, if the transfer goes ahead, it could prove beneficial for all parties. Coventry would gain an experienced Premier League midfielder capable of making an immediate impact, while Barkley would have the opportunity to take on a leading role at a club where he could become a central figure.

A move to Coventry could represent a fresh chapter for Barkley — one where his experience, maturity and technical quality are used to help a newly promoted side establish itself among England’s elite.
