West Bromwich Albion have opened discussions over appointing an experienced Championship boss to replace Eric Ramsay for the remainder of the season.
It became clear at The Hawthorns that Ramsay was under serious pressure when Norwich City netted five goals against his side in only his second match in charge. From that heavy defeat, optimism quickly faded and his departure felt unavoidable. For the second time this campaign, the Baggies’ gamble on a young coach has failed to pay off.
The big question now is whether the club roll the dice again on youth or shift their focus to proven experience.
Recent reports have linked Albion with Will Still. The former Southampton boss endured a difficult spell at St Mary’s, but his strong reputation built during his time in France still makes him an attractive candidate.
However, he is not the only name in the frame. There is said to be a potential route back for Carlos Corberán, less than two years after he departed for Valencia CF. When the Spaniard left, Albion were seventh and pushing for the play-offs. A return now would see him take over a side battling to avoid an unexpected drop.
Experience may ultimately win out, with reports from Football Insider suggesting that Albion have entered preliminary talks with Tony Mowbray about a short-term deal until the end of the season — potentially marking his third spell in charge.
For many, this is no time for experimentation. Mowbray knows the club inside out, having managed them twice before. While his most recent tenure didn’t deliver the play-off push supporters hoped for, relegation was never a serious concern. With survival now the clear objective, Albion may feel a steady, experienced hand is exactly what is required.
Boasting 195 Championship victories, the 62-year-old has the pedigree to guide the Baggies to safety before a longer-term appointment is made in the summer.
